World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

UN extends probe of Myanmar violence.

The UN decided Friday to extend an investigation into abuses committed in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine state, where violence has forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims to flee. The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution tabled by the European Union calling for the international fact-finding mission to be given another six months. Several countries distanced themselves from the resolution, including China, but none demanded a vote in the 47-member council, and the measure was adopted by consensus. The council set up the mission in March to investigate possible violations across Myanmar, with a particular focus on alleged crimes against Rohingya in Rakhine state. The Muslim minority is loathed in Myanmar, denied citizenship and are instead branded “Bengalis” — or illegal migrants who do not belong in the Buddhist-majority country. Half a million Rohingya have crushed into camps in Bangladesh since August 25, fleeing a Myanmar army campaign and communal vi

Tonto Dikeh Will Stab You Before The Next Morning If You Touch Her’ – Churchill .

Tonto Dikeh alleged that Churchill’s father was former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s gardener, that he had a hand in a miscarriage she had while with him and that he brutalized her. Someone asked him his thoughts, and the businessman in a lengthy reply took at time to explain himself, he wrote; “I’ll take time out from my very busy schedule to address these lies quickly. King’s mother had him through CS operation … it wasn’t a natural birth. Her healing process took 3 months and the doctor strongly advised against copulation for the said period. We lived together for only six months and with 3 months without copulating a 4 months pregnancy that got terminated by domestic violence is an impossibility which clears me of the claims of being a murderer and causing her to lose the said pregnancy that was a figment of her imagination to make the false claims believable. (Ouch) NCC Vows To Curb Hate Speeches In Social Media.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it is partnering the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to ensure hate speeches, particularly in the social media, are reduced to the barest minimum. The executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the NCC, Engr. Umar Garba Danbatta, made this known in Calabar Wednesday while opening a two-day workshop on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Utilization and Sustainability for South South Zone, organised by the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), a unit within the NCC. Represented by the Head of Strategy and Corporate Performance of the Universal Service Provision Fund, Kelechi Nwankwo, Danbatta said NCC would ensure that the cyberspace was sanitised in order not to endanger the peace of the country. “There is a cyber-crime law which is being operated between the NCC and the office of the national security adviser, which is being managed by the later. There are several things people want but if they

Boko Haram trials to be held behind closed doors.

Trials of Boko Haram suspects in Nigeria will take place behind closed doors with no media present, a justice ministry official with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Friday. The move was made on security grounds following discussions between the government and the Department of State Services intelligence agency. “There will be no access to the media,” said the official, who asked not to be identified. “The decision was based on the need for confidentiality because of security issues that may come up during the trial.” The justice ministry announced last week that the trials of more than 1,600 suspects were scheduled to begin from October 9. It blamed delays in prosecution on poor investigation techniques such as lack of forensic evidence, “over-reliance on confession-based evidence” and logistical problems. As of September 11, only 13 cases linked to the eight-year insurgency had been concluded, with nine convictions, according to the government. Human rights group

Guardiola won’t clamp down after Aguero crash.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insisted he isn't concerned by his players' off-field activities just hours after Sergio Aguero was involved in a car crash in the Netherlands. City were forced to rule out Aguero for Saturday's clash at Premier League champions Chelsea after the Argentina forward was a passenger in a taxi that crashed on its way to the airport in Amsterdam on Thursday evening. Aguero, 29, had been to a concert in the Dutch capital on his day off and suffered a broken rib in the smash, when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a bend and it struck a post. There have been questions over why Aguero was abroad just 48 hours before the leaders' showdown with Chelsea. In a statement, City said Aguero was in Holland "on his day off" and Guardiola was adamant his star had done nothing wrong. "It was his day off. I am not the police," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "I think days off are for players to be ha

Man Knocked Unconscious By Passerby After Attacking Lady In Public.

This is really funny. A video footage which is trending online shows the moment a man attacked a defenseless lady after an argument in public and received justice immediately. In the footage, the man (in red shirt) kicked the woman to the ground in the presence of passersby after a quarrel. The man was immediately attacked by another guy who hit him with a weapon on his head as he fell on the ground and became apparently unconscious. Passersby took their heels on seeing what had happened.

Togo: protests, a dead cow and a political message

The cow belonging to the butcher in Kparatao, northern Togo, was tied to a tree and minding its own business when the soldiers pumped it full of bullets. Within days, the stricken animal became a symbol of the popular protests against President Faure Gnassingbe which have seen mounting calls for him to step down. A photo of the white, long-horned beast sprawled in a pool of blood was shared widely on social media and sparked fevered reactions online for more than a week. Its fate was even featured on national television’s main evening news programme. But despite sparking a slew of online jokes, the killing is more than just a story and no laughing matter for the 6,000 or so inhabitants of Kparatao. The village, some 340 kilometres (about 200 miles) due north of the capital, Lome, is where opposition leader Tikpi Atchadam grew up. Nasarawa, Plateau Back Restructuring; Want True Federalism -.

Officials of states in the North-central zone of Nigeria on Thursday said they would support the restructuring of Nigeria if it would deliver a true federal system for the country. A clamour for restructuring particularly resonating in the southern part of Nigeria had forced the ruling All Progressives Congress to set up a committee to advise it on the hot political topic. At the North-central zonal consultative forum organised by the APC committee in Jos on Thursday, Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State said his people would oppose any restructuring that would draw back Nigeria’s development. “Restructuring means different things to different people,” he said in a preface to his remarks. “Some people are thinking restructuring is creation of local governments and states. If that is what it means, I don’t support it.” However, he said he would endorse the process if the intention is to strengthen Nigeria’s federal system. “Restructuring should be true federalism where our peopl

Governors seek to take over, manage federal roads.

Governors of the 36 states of the federation have agreed to take over the construction and management of some federal roads under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. The governors are to submit to President Muhammadu Buhari a strategic plan that would guide the handover and management process. Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, who briefed State House Correspondents at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday in Abuja, decried the deplorable condition of roads in the country. The development, he said, was worsening and needed states with capacity to manage them with a view to checking the needless carnage and loss of man-hours on these facilities nationwide. “Council was highly concerned about the failure of our roads, even after fixing them,” he said. Umahi, who was joined at the briefing by his Kwara and Kebbi counterparts as well the Director General of the Nigerian Export Promotion Counc
