World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

How grape compounds can help to treat depression.

A new study unravels the mechanism by which compounds found in grapes improve resilience to stress in mice and attenuate the brain changes linked with depression. In new research, a combination of various grape and grape seed extracts is shown to reduce stress-induced depression. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, major depressive disorder, or clinical  depression , is now "the  leading cause  of disability" among people between 15 and 44 years old in the United States. Every year, more than 16 million U.S. adults are affected. This is the equivalent of around 6.7 percent of the country's adult population. Conventional drug treatments for depression are not particularly effective. In fact, the authors of the new study say that less than 50 percent of those diagnosed with depression experience temporary remission of the illness. The need for alternative treatments is therefore dire. This is why the scientists — led by Giulio Maria Pasi

Cell phone radiation: Could high exposure cause tumors?.

High exposure to radiofrequency radiation resulted in tumors in tissue around the nerves in the hearts of male rats, but not of female rats or male or female mice, according to preliminary conclusions of two studies. Two new studies have investigated the effects of cell phone radiation on the health of rodents. Draft reports on the two studies by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States, were  released recently , pending a review by external experts that is scheduled to take place March 26–28. Members of the public may also submit comments. The reports contain the remaining results of two large "toxicology and carcinogenesis" studies — one conducted in rats and the other in mice — of the effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by cell phones. "The levels and duration of exposure," explains Dr. John Bucher, a senior scientist with the NTP, "to RFR were much gre

National Assembly Election To Hold First, Presidential Holds Last .

THE National Assembly elections will be conducted first in 2019, the panel of the two legislative conference committee on the amendment of the Electoral Act has endorsed. Nigerian women fight fear to make Olympic bobsleigh history.

As they prepare to make Olympic history in Pyeongchang, Nigeria’s women’s bobsleigh team admit they battle their demons every time they climb into the sled. Being billed as “Cool Runnings” reloaded in the West African country’s first Winter Games appearance, Seun Adigun and Akuoma Omeoga knelt in silent prayer Wednesday before hurtling down the track at breakneck speeds they know could kill them. “The first time I got in a sled it was honestly terrifying,” driver Seun told AFP in an interview after training. “The only thing that saved my peace of mind was that I used to be a gamer, so initially I just treated it like a video game,” added the bubbly 31-year-old, who represented Nigeria as a hurdler at the 2012 London Olympics. “That kind of helps dampen the fear because when you get in a sled you really don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. “We also pray! If there’s a ritual that we do that’s what it is.” Thirty years after the Jamaican men’s bobsled team too
