World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

North Korea offers to shut nuclear test site in May, invite US experts.

North Korea has promised to shut its atomic test site within weeks and invite American weapons experts to verify its closure, Seoul reported Sunday, as new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington had an “obligation” to pursue peace. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — who may meet US President Donald Trump as early as next month — also said Pyongyang would have no need for nuclear weapons if it were promised it would not be invaded, according to Seoul. Friday’s historic meeting saw Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agree to pursue the complete denuclearisation of the peninsula. Washington’s new chief diplomat said he and Kim held in-depth talks about a denuclearisation “mechanism” when they met over Easter. “We talked a great deal about what it might look like, what this complete, verifiable, irreversible mechanism might look like,” Pompeo said. “We have an obligation to engage in diplomatic discourse to try and find a peaceful solution so that Am

Twin Kabul suicide blasts kill at least 25, including journalists.

At least 25 people were killed, including Agence France-Presse chief photographer Shah Marai and five other journalists, when two suicide blasts ripped through Kabul on Monday, police and AFP have confirmed. The attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, are the latest deadly assaults on the Afghan capital and have spurred an outpouring of grief among journalists, many of whom took to Twitter to post tributes to their colleagues. Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai said the second explosion came minutes after the first, and targeted reporters at the scene. “The bomber disguised himself as a journalist and detonated himself among the crowd,” he said. The interior ministry confirmed the death toll and said six journalists were among those killed. It also said 49 people had been wounded, amid fears the death toll could rise. AFP confirmed that, along with Marai, two journalists from 1TV, one from Tolo news and one from Jahan TV were among the dead. Marai joi

Deontay Wilder hopes to fight anthony joshua soon.

Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) still expects his fight against Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) to take place despite the fact that AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn chose not to accept the rich $50 million offer of for him to take the fight with the WBC heavyweight champion. Team Wilder set a deadline of Thursday night that came and went without Hearn accepting it. Wilder, 32, is not giving up on the Joshua fight; although he may have to if AJ chooses to ask for a King’s ransom for him to agree to the contest. Apparently, $50 million guaranteed loot that Team Wilder officered was not enough for him to accept it. If Joshua wants 50 million in pounds instead of dollars, then I’m afraid that fight is never going to be made. $70 million is just too much money for Joshua, especially with the way he’s looked so shaky lately in fights against Joseph Parker, Carlos Takam and Wladimir Klitschko. Joshua looked beatable in each of those contests. “It will definitely happen,”  Wilder said to skys

But its native African name is much more expressive,  Mosi-oa-Tunya , the ‘Smoke that Thunders’, is a reference to the immense spray and rumbling that the Falls generate. With a width of 1,700 meters and a depth of 108 meters, the Falls are twice the height of Niagara Falls. And they’re surrounded by the savannah, which is full of rhinos, hippos and lions. Joke signing or unheralded hero? Marouane Fellaini's divisive Man Utd career.

The Belgian scored another important goal on Sunday, but he is unlikely to ever win over all United fans despite the news that he may be about to stay On an afternoon when Manchester United and Arsenal fans took it in turns to mockingly chant that they wanted their respective opposing manager to stay in their role, it was noticeable that there was no call for Marouane Fellaini to sign a new deal after he nodded home the injury-time winner. Fellaini has been a divisive figure since the day he arrived as David Moyes’s only senior signing in the summer of 2013 for in excess of £28 million, and remains an unwelcome hero even when he scores goals like the one that booked United a place in next season’s Champions League on Sunday. For a player who has made such an impact so often in delicate situations over the past five years, Fellaini is a figure on whom there is simply no consensus among United fans. If anything, the majority seem to want shot of him more with every passing day
