World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Doctors cure seven adult patients of sickle cell disease using stem cells.

Doctors at the University of Illinois Hospital have cured seven adult patients of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder primarily affecting the black community, using stem cells from donors previously thought to be incompatible, thanks to a new transplant treatment protocol. The doctors report on the new technique in the journal Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. With the new protocol, patients with aggressive sickle cell disease can receive stem cells from family members if only half of their human leukocyte antigen (HLA) markers match. Previously, donors had to be a family member with a full set of matching HLA markers, or a “fully-matched” donor. HLA markers are proteins on the surface of cells that help to regulate the immune system. The human body uses these proteins to identify which cells belong in the body and which cells do not. Because HLA markers are inherited from parents, family members are the most likely to have matching proteins. I

Nigerian hackers steal thousands of dollars from shipping firms.

Nigerian hackers, grouped as Gold Galleon, are menacing shipping firms and bleeding them of thousands of dollars. Network security firm Secureworks has red-flagged the group, whose focus appears solely to be the maritime industry. The group, according to a report by Maritime Executive, an online platform, uses basic email scams and publicly available hacking software to try to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from unsuspecting ship managers and service providers. Secureworks said Gold Galleon is a group of about 20 individuals who work together to hack maritime firms all over the world using basic techniques. They rent hacking tools for just a few dollars per month; they communicate via Skype; and they identify targets using online company directories and commercially-available contact lists. While the criminal gang uses an online proxy service to disguise its location, several cues indicate that it is of Nigerian origin, Secureworks said. The group communicates in pidgi

More than 9,000 enter for 2018 U.S. Open.

The field of contestants for golf’s most democratic major has been set. The USGA announced that it received 9,049 entries for this year’s U.S. Open, with the deadline for entry expiring at 5 p.m. ET Wednesday. That total includes 515 applications on the final day, 115 in the final hour and a buzzer-beater from Drew Caudill, a 32-year-old pro from Mount Vernon, Ohio, who beat the entry deadline by only 23 seconds. This marks the seventh straight year that the USGA has received more than 9,000 entries, but the total marks the second straight year of a decline in applications. At least 9,860 players entered each year from 2013-16, topping out in 2014 when 10,127 applications were received. But last year there were 9,485 entries for Erin Hills, and this year’s return to Shinnecock yielded only one more application than the USGA got in 2005. For the vast majority of entrants, the next step is a spot in 18-hole local qualifying which begins April 30 and runs through May 17. The fortuna

Quite Historical as Kim Jung Visit crossed the 38th parallel with South Korea president..

Kim Jong-un has become the first North Korean leader to step into the South for 65 years as he met with President Moon Jae-in for a historic peace summit on Friday. The dictator crossed the 38th parallel and warmly shook hands with his sworn enemy before both men walked side-by-side to a welcome ceremony attended by flamboyantly-dressed South Korean soldiers. Moving on to the truce village of Panmunjom, Kim signed the guest book at the Peace House, which will be the venue for talks focusing on whether the North can be persuaded to give up its nuclear bombs. 'New history starts from now, at the historic starting point of an era of peace,' he wrote. In televised talks shortly afterwards, Kim said he was ready for 'heartfelt, sincere and honest' discussions with Moon, although he did not mention denuclearization. Senate Could Impeach President Buhari in matter of months .

The Senate yesterday resolved to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to a joint session of the two chambers of the National Assembly after due consultations with the House of Representatives to brief it on why the state of insecurity in the country has lingered despite several interventions. It also invited the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris to appear before it next Wednesday. It took exceptions to his absence yesterday in plenary against earlier invitation to brief the red chamber on the controversial arrest and ensuing national imbroglio involving Senator Dino Melaye. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki noted that IGP’s decision to send a representative was not good enough. Deputy Senate leader, Bala Na’Allah, informed his colleagues that the IGP accompanied President Buhari on a state visit to Bauchi, hence his failure to show up. Besides, some lawmakers canvassed for the declaration of a state of emergency in all the troubled states across the c

How Real Madrid can stop Barcelona winning the title... and why its would be too hard!

The Merengue are still mathematically in the running to retain their crown - but they would need a miracle to overcome their rivals After 33 hard-fought rounds, the end of La Liga is imminent. Ernesto Valverde's men have led the competition from start to finish and, if results go the Catalans' way this weekend, they could get their hands on the trophy for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons as early as this Sunday. Only the two Madrid clubs, Atletico and Real, mathematically remain in the running. Diego Simeone's men lie 11 points off the summit while the defending champions sit a further four points back having played one game fewer than their city rivals. In theory at least, however, they could still retain their Liga title – although it would require a minor miracle.
