World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

MESSI SHOWS THAT 2018 WILL BE THE YEAR OF THE GOAT.

Real Madrid and Ronaldo may have swept before them in 2017 but come the New Year Messi and Barcelona will be in charge There’s a meme doing the rounds that you might have seen about how to start off your New Year right. Start playing a certain song at a certain time, for example, and the crucial part will kick in at the stroke of midnight. Well, if you start watching Barcelona’s Clasico victory over Real Madrid at precisely 22:47 and 41 seconds on New Year’s Eve, as the clock strikes midnight you’ll see something very special. Lionel Messi’s through-ball for Luis Suarez in the build-up to Barcelona’s second goal was otherworldly and, maybe, a little underappreciated given the melee that got sparked seconds afterwards.   RELATED CHELSEA MUST BUY IN JANUARY TO COMPETE WITH PEP'S CITY AND MESSI'S BARCA RONALDO VS MESSI IN EL CLASICO - WHO HAS THE BEST STATS, GOALS AND WIN RECORD? Muslims Storm Egyptian Church, Attack Worshippers, Call For It To Be Demolished - .

Hundreds of Muslim demonstrators have stormed a Coptic church in Egypt calling for it to be demolished. A hostile mob wreaked havoc in the building by wrecking sacred objects and attacking worshippers after gathering outside during Friday prayers. During the brief siege the demonstrators chanted offensive slogans and called for the church's demolition, the diocese in Atfih said. The wounded were transferred to a nearby hospital after security guards dispersed the mob. The nature of their injuries is not known. The church in Giza, just outside of Cairo, is yet to be sanctioned by the state but has been observing prayers for 15 years. The diocese said it had officially sought to legalize the building's status under a 2016 law that laid down the rules for building churches. Local authorities often refuse to give building permits for new churches, fearing protests by Muslim conservatives. That has prompted Christians to illegally build churches or set up churches in other buildings

Fayose’s endorsement of deputy raises dust in Ekiti.

The bickering surrounding the unilateral endorsement of the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola by his boss, Governor Ayodele Fayose as the governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2018 governorship election, ought to have been an internal affair of the ruling party. However, some concerned citizens of the state, particularly those in the opposition political parties, were of the view that there was more to the development than meets the eye, while others considered the move as a mere political strategy deployed by Fayose to retain the state after his exit next year. Although, it is rare in Nigerian democracy for an incumbent governor to endorse his deputy as successor, Fayose’s decision is being taken with a pinch of salt, as some described it as having a dangerous political undertone that is capable of creating problems in the state. This school of thought believed that what Fayose had done suggested he is neither ready to

10,000 refugees’ to be relocated from Libya to EU in 2018.

Up to 10,000 people stranded in refugee camps and detention centres in Libya could be relocated to Europe in 2018, the Italian government said on Sunday. The initiative would be part of an attempt by EU countries to address the deteriorating conditions in Libya, where thousands of people are held captive in inhumane conditions. “In 2018, up to 10,000 refugees will be able to come to Europe without risk, through humanitarian corridors,” Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti said in an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica. The announcement comes after a group of 162 “vulnerable” people, from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen, were evacuated from Libya and arrived by military plane in Rome on Friday. The group included single mothers, unaccompanied children and handicapped people, and was the first time refugees and migrants had been relocated directly to Europe by the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR). About 400,000 migrants are in Libya, including roughly 36,00

THOMAS COEX / AFP Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his country will withdraw from the UN cultural agency UNESCO. Netanyahu had already announced in October that Israel would pull out of UNESCO following a decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the U.S. from the agency for its alleged “anti-Israel bias.” A Foreign Ministry spokesman had said Saturday that a letter of withdrawal will be sent before the start of the new year. “Over the weekend I instructed the Foreign Ministry to withdraw from UNESCO,” Netanyahu said at the start of his weekly cabinet meeting. “I think that this is necessary in light of the biased, unilateral and absurd attitude of the organization towards us and also in the backgr
