World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain...

Bomb rocks Greek courthouse amid foreclosures row.

A bomb exploded early Friday outside one of Greece’s main courthouses, causing material damage but no injuries, with police suspecting a far-left group of setting it off to protest property foreclosures sought by debt-laden banks. The explosion occurred at 0125 GMT outside the Athens appeals court after calls warning of a bomb were made to media outlets, police said. The blast broke several windows and caused extensive damage to the court’s front entrance, where part of the first floor appears to have collapsed. Windows at nearby buildings were also shattered. The attack took place just three blocks from the Athens police headquarters, yet the assailants were able to escape. The bomb was inside a backpack left at the building’s entrance by two men who then fled in a small van, a police source told AFP. When a guard inside the building ran towards them, a third person waiting in the van fired a shot at him, but the guard was not hurt, the police said. It is beli...

Ronaldo 100 percent fit and has Real’s respect – Zidane.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane insisted Cristiano Ronaldo is 100 percent fit for Saturday’s huge El Clasico clash against Barcelona despite playing a limited role in training this week. And the Frenchman urged Ronaldo to put his perceived desire for an improved contract from the European champions on the back burner to help Real get back into the La Liga title race. “He is 100 percent, he trained today and that is all that interests me,” Zidane said on Friday. Ronaldo, 32, said he would like to retire at Real after scoring the winner in last weekend’s Club World Cup final, but that decision depended on those that run the club. The Portuguese star signed a new deal to 2021 with Real just over a year ago, but has since seen Neymar’s move to Paris Saint Germain for a world record fee and a bumper new deal for Lionel Messi at Barcelona reportedly see them leapfrog Ronaldo as the world’s best paid player. “Cristiano just has to think about what he has done, what he i...

Nigerian ‘mafia’ working with Libyans to smuggle migrants.

Amid the global outcry over hellish migrant camps in Libya, many African leaders have accused the country of racism and crimes against their African “brothers”. But for those who have returned from the living hell, it’s not only the Libyans who are profiting from the “migrant business”. Illegal migrants are also the prey of sub-Saharan mafia groups, especially Nigerians. Daniel* was a student when smugglers convinced him to travel to Europe, which many migrants see as the path to a prosperous life. “In two weeks, you will be in Italy,” they promised him. But 10 months later, in early December, the 28-year-old Nigerian was repatriated to Benin City, his hometown, after enduring kidnapping, violence and forced labour. His legs were lacerated by electric wire burns. “We feel cheated. It was a trap. The guys who did that to us are the ones who collected money from us” to go to Europe, Daniel said, surrounded by his likewise disillusioned companions. Some 200 Nigerians ...

If A Husband Refuses To Spend On His Wife, Is It Right To Sexually Refuse Him? .

Praise be to Allah The husband is obliged to spend on his wife’s maintenance, on a reasonable basis, because Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):  “Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means” [an-Nisa; 4:34] “Let the rich man spend according to his means, and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allah has given him. Allah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has given him” [at-Talaq 65:7].  It was narrated that Mu‘awiyah al-Qushayri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what are the rights of the wife of one of us over him? He said: “That you feed her as you feed yourself, clothe her as you clothe yourself, do not strike the face, do not disgrace her and if you want to shun her (by way of disciplining her) do not leave home.”  Narrated by Abu Dawood (2142) a...

Apple admits to slowing iPhones as batteries age.

Apple on Thursday confirmed what some conspiracy theorists suspected, that it intentionally slows performance of older iPhones as batteries weaken from age. The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries. “Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices,” an Apple spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry. “Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.” Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in mobile devices, and charging capacity naturally wanes with use and time. Meanwhile, smartphone operating softwa...

Security policy, human capacity hobble cybersecurity war.

Cybersecurity experts have decried poor human capacity and pointed at the absence of national security policy as a major roadblock in the fight against cybercrime. They also expressed worry over unyielding attitude of management board of organizations in approving information technology security budget as a proactive measure, rather than reactive measure. Peter Obadare, chief operating officer, Digital Encode, said that major challenge organizations face in the fight against cybercrimal and cyber warfare is lack of trained manpower. “I have been in cybersecurity ecosystem for many years now and have identified lack of trained manpower in most organizations. Cybersecurity is not a certificate that speaks for you, but a continuous training to be ahead of the smart criminals, most organisations find it difficult to continually update their IT security staff to be able to face cyber threats,” he said. Rommy Okonkwo, country manager, Check Point Software Technologies, f...
