World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Regime air raids kill 33 civilians in northwest Syria: monitor.

Regime air strikes have killed 33 civilians in the past 24 hours in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib where government forces are fighting jihadists, a monitor said on Monday. On Monday alone, the strikes killed 16 civilians including 11 in a vegetable market in the town of Saraqeb, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The 17 others were killed on Sunday in raids on various areas of the province, large parts of which are controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is dominated by Al-Qaeda’s former Syria affiliate. “Regime war planes have intensified their strikes over the past 24 hours after relative calm due to bad weather,” Observatory chief Rami Abdul Rahman said. Syrian troops had been advancing on Idlib as part of a fierce offensive launched in late December with Russian backing. At the market in Saraqeb, an AFP correspondent saw pools of blood on the ground. Small trucks loaded with sacks of potatoes stood abandoned after t

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Monday said it had started the evacuation of abandoned aircraft at the airside of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos. Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, confirmed the development to newsmen in Lagos. Yakubu said that no fewer than 13 aircraft had been abandoned at the airside by different airlines over the years, despite several warnings issued to them by FAAN. “We have about 13 aircraft abandoned at the airside. On Friday, we moved four aircraft from the airside and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Lagos airport told me again this morning that they are going to move another set of four aircraft. “We have taken the legal issues into consideration; if you agree with me, these aircraft are not helping us in anyway. They are taking up a lot of space. Space for aircraft landing and taking off are being taken by these aircraft. “The airports belong to FAAN, which mea

Spectranet re-strategies for market dominance, focuses on quality service.

Spectranet In its effort to assist in achieving Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) 30 percent broadband penetration target by the end of this year, Spectranet has re-strategies its service delivery model focusing on quality, affordability, secured and innovative services. Mr. Ajay Awasthi, chief executive officer, Spectranet, said that Spectranet is not just talking about connectivity, rather high speed broadband connectivity. “There are 100 plus ISPs in Nigeria with only three or four of them active in the market. What is very important is 24/7, 365 days internet availability. That is where Spectranet is going to play very important role to ensure broadband availability. With broadband availability, you can start talking about critical services such as Internet of Things which demands ‘real time’ service delivery. “Secondly, affordability; you might have services, but how affordable are they? Again, Spectranet is going to provide to the market affordable a

Cyber attacks: NITDA wants MDAs, private sector to be vigilant, proactive.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), private sector and the public to be vigilant and proactive ahead of possible cyber-attacks in 2018. The Director-General of the agency, Dr. Isa Pantami, made the call in a statement he issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja. Pantami said that the cyber-attacks would be targeted at the banking, health, power systems and critical national infrastructures. “The agency’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT), in conjunction with other industry stakeholders have intercepted some signals of potential cyber-attacks. “This is in their efforts at ensuring a safe and secure cyberspace. “These attacks are targeting banking, health and other systems, power and transportation systems as well as other critical national infrastructure. “In this regard, the need for all to be vigilant and proactive as far as security

Understanding and carving a niche market for your business.

I know it sounds cool when you are asked what product or service you offer and your listing seems endless. That can be the quickest way to an epic fail as a small business owner. To be realistic, it is almost impossible to be the best at every product or service you offer especially when you are offering much more than you or your business can handle. There is the temptation to do too many things at once, typically the jack of all trades and master of none scenario. You have to intentionally carve out a niche for your business offering. A niche market is the subset of a market on which a specific business (products or service) is focused. A niche market can be created with the location you operate in, the kind of customers you sell to, the quality of product or service, pricing, the way you execute your service or deliver your products etc. Several entrepreneurs make the mistake of offering a lot of products and services at the same time or conflicting products or ser

90,000 flee Philippine volcano stretching relief camps.

The number of Filipinos fleeing from the erupting Mayon volcano to safe zones has swelled to nearly 90,000, officials said Monday, worsening a sanitation crisis in the already stretched relief camps. President Rodrigo Duterte flew to the central city of Legazpi on Monday to assess the disaster zone, some two weeks after the country’s most active volcano began belching spectacular but potentially lethal ash columns, lava and rocks. Authorities have thrown a nine kilometre (5.6 mile) no-go zone around the mountain with the vast majority of those living in its shadow now safely outside that radius. But sanitary conditions in the safe-zones are far from ideal. Al Francis Bichara, the governor of Albay province, said authorities expect the evacuees will need to stay at the camps for at least a month. But he warned limited local government resources were being stretched, citing the lack of toilets at the shelters, where he said an average of 200 people now took turns usi

Super Eagles is Argentina’s major threat at World Cup’.

Argentine midfielder Emiliano Rigoni has singled out the Super Eagles of Nigeria as their toughest opponent at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The two nations are in Group D and will clash in the final group game at Saint Petersburg on June 26. However, the Zenit St. Petersburg right-winger reckons it will be a different ball game in Russia, despite the fact that his side has a superior head-to-head record over the three-time African champions. Rigoni came on as a substitute in their 4-2 loss against the Super Eagles in last November’s friendly in Krasnodar. “In general, I think that there is no such group at the World Cup in Russia where you can definitely say who is the favourite, where exactly you know which teams will leave the group,” Rigoni told his club’s official website. “This is not [as] all matches will be difficult. Separately, I would single out the game with Nigeria, which we have met a huge number of times in the past World Cups, and it has never been

Corruption, greatest evil of our time, Buhari tells AU summit .

President Muhammadu Buhari has in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia described corruption as one of the greatest evils of our time. He spoke while formally launching the African Anti-Corruption Year 2018 during the Opening Ceremony of the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government. “Corruption is indeed one of the greatest evils of our time. Corruption rewards those who do not play by the rules and also creates a system of distortion and diversion thereby destroying all efforts at constructive, just and fair governance,” he stated. The theme of the 30th African Union (AU) Summit is “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.” Buhari, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu yesterday, thanked his African colleagues for entrusting him with such a noble responsibility. He pledged to do his best “to ensure that the anti-corruption agenda will receive the attention

NDDC, China plan 7,000 mega watts regional power project in Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) says it is in discussion with a Chinese firm to establish a regional power pool project in the Niger Delta. The NDDC Managing Director, Mr Nsima Ekere, disclosed this in a statement issued by the commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ibitoye Abosede, on Monday in Port Harcourt. Ekere, represented by the commission’s Executive Director, Projects, Dr. Samuel Adjogbe, said at the meeting with officials of the Chinese company, SINOTEC, that the project was designed to stimulate industrial growth of the region. He said on completion of the project, 7,000 mega watts of electricity would be produced from 18 power stations spread across the region. “We have looked at some indicators and it is obvious that the power requirement for industrial growth in the region is not available. “So, we need to make deliberate efforts to set up projects that can boost power and attract investors to the region. Ekere said the commission

EU says would react ‘swiftly’ to any Trump trade curbs.

The European Union warned Monday it would react “swiftly and appropriately” if Washington imposed trade curbs, after US President Donald Trump accused the bloc of trading “very unfairly” and hinted at such action. “The European Union stands ready to react swiftly and appropriately in case our exports are affected by any restrictive trade measures from the United States,” European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told reporters. Trump told Britain’s ITV channel that the EU has treated the US “very unfairly when it came to trade” and that his many problems with Brussels could “morph into something very big”. In reaction to the Trump interview, Schinas said: “For us, trade policy is not a zero-sum game, it is not about winners and losers. We here in the European Union believe that trade can and should be win-win.” Schinas added: “We also believe that while trade has to be open and fair it has also to be rules based.” Trump delivered the warning during a wid

Kim Jong-Nam met American days before his death: witness.

The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un met an unidentified American on a tourist island in Malaysia four days before he was assassinated in a Cold War-style hit, a court heard Monday. Kim Jong-Nam met the man at a hotel in Langkawi on February 9, a witness told the trial of two women accused of the killing that stunned the world. Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong allegedly rubbed VX nerve agent on Kim’s face at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13 as he waited to board a flight to Macau. Kim died in agony shortly afterwards and the women were arrested days later. The pair, who face death by hanging if convicted, have pleaded not guilty and said they were tricked into believing they were part of a prank reality TV show, with their lawyers blaming North Korean agents. South Korea also has accused North Korea of ordering the murder, an allegation it denies. At Monday’s trial, defence lawyer Gooi Soon Seng questioned s

Kenya opposition to swear-in leader as ‘president’.

Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga is planning to have himself sworn in as an alternative president on Tuesday, seen as a final push to challenge Uhuru Kenyatta’s election. Odinga challenged the result of the original August vote winning an unprecedented annulment, but then boycotted the court-ordered re-run in October handing victory to Kenyatta who won 98 percent of the vote but with a turnout of just 39 percent. On Tuesday the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) which continues to claim fraud and wants another election to be held, intends to stage its own “swearing-in” ceremony in the capital Nairobi, hoping to pressure the government for talks. The ceremony — if it goes ahead — will put the opposition on a collision course with police and the government, with attorney general Githu Muigai warning in December that any “swearing-in” would be treasonous raising the possibility of Odinga’s arrest, a move that would heighten tensions.
