World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Remembering Ebola Victims Health Workers..

Ebola Has Killed More Than 200 Doctors, Nurses, And Other Healthcare Workers Since June.   Williams Mills  , Contributor I write sharp takes on the health, policy and wonk news of the day. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. Ebola has now infected multiple people in America: The first two homegrown cases of Ebola are a pair of nurses who got sick after treating Thomas Duncan, the first person ever diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. Both nurses with Ebola — Nina Pham and Amber Joy Vinson — were among the 70-plus staff who encountered Duncan during his 10-day stay at Dallas's Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. However, several staff on Wednesday anonymously told reporters that the nurses were not given sufficient protection against the risk of Ebola. WWII bomb forces evacuation of 10,000 in Berlin.

About 10,000 people in Berlin were forced to leave their homes on Monday as bomb disposal units prepared to defuse an unexploded World War II bomb. Construction workers found the 250-kilo (550-pound) device earlier in the day, prompting police to seal off the area within a 500-metre radius of the site in west Berlin’s Innsbrucker Platz. Underground and suburban rail traffic was disrupted, and officers went house to house to ensure that the area was cleared before disposal experts moved in. More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded ordnance is regularly found buried in Germany, a legacy of the intense bombing campaigns by Allied forces against Nazi Germany. At least 60,000 people were evacuated in central Frankfurt in September, the biggest operation of its kind in post-war Germany, after a 1.8-tonne British bomb nicknamed “Wohnblockknacker”, or blockbuster, was discovered. In May, 50,000 residents were ordered out of their homes in the northern city of Hano

Restructuring not solution to Nigeria’s problems – Utomi.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, on Monday said restructuring alone would not solve Nigeria’s development challenges. He made the statement while speaking at The Platform, a national discourse forum organised by the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos. Utomi said empirical evidence showed no correlation between more resources and development in the country. He explained that some states with less resources were more developed than some resource-rich states. The APC chieftain, therefore, said that the belief that the states would do better with more resources was a myth. He added that only those states that made the people the core of their government would develop. Utomi decried the costs of governance at the various levels of government, saying that the situation was a drain on the country’s resources. He described governance in most states as poor, while saying local governments in the country were dysfu

Bali volcano evacuees outside red zone fearful to return home.

Thousands of residents who fled a rumbling volcano on the island of Bali are refusing to leave evacuation centres after being told to return to their homes outside of the immediate danger zone. Officials announced the highest possible alert level for Mount Agung, about 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the resort hub of Kuta, on September 22, telling people not to venture within nine to 12 kilometres of the summit. 5 Surprising Facts About Nikola Tesla .

A new statue of Nikola Tesla now graces New York's Long Island, the latest homage to the celebrated visionary. At the statue's unveiling last week, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic told the dedication crowd at Tesla's former Wardenclyffe laboratory that the scientist and inventor had been a man whose "ideas were larger than his time." Long overshadowed in public memory by his one-time employer, Thomas Edison, Tesla (1856-1943) was a brilliant scientist and engineer who earned more than 700 patents. He is most famous for developing alternating current, but his work also led to advances in wireless communications, lasers, x-rays, radar, lighting, robotics, and much more. US biology trio wins Nobel Medicine Prize

US geneticists Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young were awarded the Nobel Medicine Prize Monday for shedding light on the internal biological clock that governs the wake-sleep cycles of most living things. “Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronised with the Earth’s revolutions,” the Nobel Assembly announced. Life on Earth is adapted to the rotation of our planet. For many years, scientists have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal clock that help them anticipate and adapt to the rhythm of the day. Hall, 72, Rosbash, 73, and Young, 68, “were able to peek inside our biological clock and elucidate its inner workings,” said the Nobel Assembly. The clock influences such biological functions as hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism. It is what causes jetlag — when our internal clock and external environment move out of sync when we change time z

Taking Any Paid Job Is Risky In The Present Day Nigeria.

Still in the celebration of Nigeria 57th independence day,  If October 1st is one of the most important day for Nigerian. Today is the 2nd most important day to think about us and our future. We, as a generation of young people in this country live in very unique and different era from that of our fathers. Our great grandfathers lived in a time where there was no freedom. And even if they worked hard, someone could just take it away - and there was no way to even put up a fight about it. Though most of our parents were not in the British era, they had parents who lived pre-independence; and they knew what it was like. Our grand parents encouraged our parents to look for stability in life - and take "safe, secure jobs" and not take risks in life. Our parents grew up in a time where - if you had a stable job, with a stable income, paid your taxes and didn't question authority, you could live a pretty decent life. And that was a huge improvement over the unpredictable lives

Buhari Lied To Nigerians In His October 1 Speech – Junaid Mohammed

A second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Muhammed, has berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s October 1 speech. Muhammed said the speech was “not realistic,” adding that some of the claims made by Buhari with regards to his policies were not true. The Northern elder noted that if Buhari was articulate, the speech would have been an “avenue to mobilise and regain the confidence of the people.” Speaking with Punch, Muhammed said, “Frankly speaking, the speech is not realistic. There is nothing and there was nothing meant to be spectacular or unique about the speech of the 57th anniversary. “It is celebratory. Where we have a leader who is articulate or is in a firm control of the government, the speech could have been an avenue to mobilise and regain the confidence of the people. “As far as I am concerned, there is nothing in the speech to energise, galvanise or persuade me. “The government muddled up a speech that should be about matters of national importance with personal reminiscences of bei
