World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

El-Zakzaky: Quo vadis, the Nigerian state?.

Of what value is democracy to the Nigerian State when elements in the executive arm of government are acting above the law, treating the courts with condescension? Yet, we delude ourselves that our nation is running a presidential system of government anchored on the time-tested principles of power separation as well as checks and balances. And how meaningful are these when the other arms of government are unable to keep a tight rein on the executive arm against abuse of power and maladministration? On December 14, 2015, in Zaria, an influential emirate in Kaduna State, the Nigerian military clamped down on the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, both of whom have since the incident been in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS), despite court orders for their release. Interestingly and in its clichéd fashion, the Nigerian state has consistently defended its continued detention of citizens El-Zakzaky and his wife on security gro

Africa still in shock at Trump’s vulgar comments on Africa, says Mahamat.

Chairperson Moussa Mahamat said on Thursday African leaders and citizens are still in shock at vulgar comments about the continent attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump. Mahamat was speaking during the opening session of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “At the time of the convening of the meeting Africa has not yet finished digesting the statements and pronouncements made by U.S. President which has deeply shocked through the messages of despise and hatred and the desire to marginalise and exclude Africa,” said Mahamat. He also said Africa won’t keep quiet in the face of hateful comments. Trump reportedly used the word “shithole” to describe African countries, Haiti and El Salvador while discussing immigration issues with U.S. lawmakers earlier this month. Trump’s alleged remarks have caused outrage across the world with officials in African, European, Latin American countries and UN expressing condemnatio

Senate turns heat on Buhari over killings by herdsmen.

The Senate, yesterday, delivered a damning indictment on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, stopping short of calling for the incumbent’s resignation. It, however, minced no words in questioning the relevance of cabinet members and service chiefs whom it accused of failing to protect the life and property of Nigerians amid onslaught by foreign militias. They must be relieved of their duties, the chamber submitted. The House also flayed a plot by unnamed person in the presidency to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki while the National Assembly was on Christmas break.Without a dissenting voice, the Senate resolved to suspend sitting next Wednesday and Thursday for a security summit to be presided over by Saraki. Some 24 hours before yesterday’s reprimand, the Senate had debated the worsening state of security in the country, an indication of its growing dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of the matter. Some of the lawmakers disclosed that the

Three dead, scores injured as train derails in Italy.

At least three people were killed and 10 seriously injured when a packed regional train derailed Thursday near Milan in northern Italy, emergency services said. Hours after the crash, rescuers continued to search for passengers inside the wreckage. One of the carriages was lying across the track, bent almost at a right angle. About 100 other people sustained light injuries, Cristina Corbetta, an official with the regional emergency services in Milan, told Sky TG24. She said the incident happened at around 7 am (0600 GMT) near Segrate in Milan’s northeastern suburbs. The cause was not immediately clear. Many of the passengers were travelling to work in Italy’s economic capital, or were students. It is the most serious rail accident in Italy since 23 people were killed in a high-speed head-on collision between two passenger trains in July 2016 in the southern Puglia region.   The injured were evacuated on stretc
