World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

'Wilshere the most overrated player on the planet' - Keane slams Arsenal star.

The former Manchester United star took aim at the Gunners, with special criticism pointed at the midfielder, after their loss to Ostersund Roy Keane let his feelings about Arsenal be known after their stunning loss to Ostersund in the Europa League, taking particular aim at midfielder Jack Wilshere who he called the "most overrated player on the planet". Arsenal advanced to the last 16 courtesy of a 4-2 aggregate victory but it was a night to forget for the Londoners, who crashed to a 2-1 defeat Thursday. A pair of first-half goals within 70 seconds from Hosam Aiesh and Ken Sema had Swedish visitors Ostersunds dreaming of the unlikeliest of upsets at the Emirates Stadium. Sead Kolasinac ended Ostersunds' hopes in the second half as Arsenal avoided an embarrassing exit but former Manchester United captain Keane took aim at the Gunners, with Wilshere firmly in his sights. "Arsenal are a great example of how not to start a game of football," Keane s

Iran headscarf protester sparks social media storm.

A video showing an Iranian policeman shoving a woman protesting against mandatory headscarves off her makeshift podium in a busy Tehran street sparked criticism on social media on Friday. The video of the solitary female demonstrator was apparently shot on Enghelab (Revolution) Street, where a woman was first detained in December after standing with her head uncovered waving a scarf on a stick. Since then several dozen Iranian women have published photos of themselves in the street or parks, their heads uncovered, waving their scarves in an act of defiance. The woman in the video is seen standing on a street cabinet with her arms raised in the air, her long blond hair worn in a high pony tail. Asked by two policeman to get down, she replies calmly: “Tell me what my offence is and I’ll get down.”   “Disturbing public order,” one of them says. A crowd then forms and starts clapping. Pogba being treated like a bouncer by single-minded Mourinho.

Signed to be the centrepiece of the new United, the £89m man is suffering at the hands of a manager who wants to harness his power, not his finesse Jose Mourinho gave the  BT Sport  reporter Des Kelly a hug in his Champions League post-match interview on Wednesday. Why? Des asked him about Scott McTominay, who started against Sevilla, rather than Paul Pogba, who didn't. It gave Mourinho the opportunity to wax lyrical about all the things the young midfielder could do while at the same time hinting at the things Pogba could not. “He did everything well,” the Manchester United manager said of McTominay's display in the last 16 first leg. “He put lots of pressure on Banega, which was important to stop him to play. He was always comfortable - simple, safe in possession. I think he was brilliant. “But I have also to say that in my opinion the midfield started really well. And then when Herrera came out Paul made a big effort to go into that dynamic that we need. And I thin

EFCC ‘investigates APC’s National Working Committee’.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have begun beaming its searchlight on how the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has been spending party funds. The move comes barely four days to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling party. It followed a strongly worded letter said to have been written by the National Leader and former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, accusing Odigie-Oyegun of frustrating his efforts at reconciling aggrieved members of the party. The EFCC’s action was said to have been prompted by members of the Buhari/APC Anti-Corruption Support Group. Sources told The Guardian that officials of the anti-graft agency stormed the party’s secretariat at about 12:00 p.m. yesterday in a black SUV and headed straight to the office of the national chairman.Last week, the group, led by one Ishola Adeshina, was at the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja, calling for the immediate pro
