World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

IPOB Members With ‘Biafra Currency’ In Abia Arrested By Police.

Abia State Police Command has arrested some suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) caught with Biafra currency in the state. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Anthony Ogbizi, disclosed this to reporters on Saturday while parading the purported IPOB members along with other suspects at the Police Officers’ Mess in Umuahia, the state capital. “These IPOB members were arrested with Biafra currency, so when we say that IPOB has gone beyond a particular stage, the public may seem to disbelieve us because of their propaganda,” he said. “Gradually you are seeing it, these three IPOB members were caught with the Biafra currency”. Ogbizi said the arrest was made as a result of the level of professionalism and respect for diversity deployed by men of the Police Command. He said the suspects would be made to face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others. Others paraded alongside the supposed IPOB members include suspected murderers, k

Scottish minister quits over ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

A junior minister in Scotland’s government resigned on Saturday after admitting “inappropriate behaviour”, as a sleaze scandal in British politics showed no sign of abating. Childcare minister Mark McDonald said in a statement that he apologised “unreservedly to anyone I have upset or who might have found my behaviour inappropriate”. “Some of my previous actions have been considered to be inappropriate — where I have believed myself to have been merely humorous or attempting to be friendly, my behaviour might have made others uncomfortable or led them to question my intentions,” he said. A government spokesman confirmed McDonald had tendered his resignation to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon earlier Saturday. He is expected to remain a lawmaker in the Scottish parliament, representing Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party in Aberdeen. Several claims of harassment and abuse have emerged against British politicians in the wake of the allegations by dozens of women

Former Democrat Party chair considered replacing Clinton with Biden.

The former Democratic Party chief seriously considered replacing Hillary Clinton with then US vice president Joe Biden as the party’s White House candidate after Clinton fell ill at a public event, according to excerpts from a new memoir published Saturday. Donna Brazile also wrote that Clinton’s campaign was badly mismanaged, “anemic” and had taken on “the odor of failure.” She likened the campaign’s New York headquarters to a hospital ward where “someone had died.” The Washington Post published the searing details after obtaining an advance copy of Brazile’s book, which will be released Tuesday. Brazile, 57, is a longtime Democratic strategist who served as the Democratic National Committee’s interim chairwoman during key months of last year’s presidential campaign. Explosive revelations from Brazile earlier in the week, published by Politico, said Clinton’s team essentially took over day-to-day operations of the DNC, in essence rigging the system against Senator B

Puigdemont turns himself in to Belgian police.

Catalonia’s sacked separatist leader Carles Puigdemont and four of his former ministers turned themselves in to Belgian police on Sunday after Spain issued a warrant for their arrest. The five, who face accusations of rebellion and sedition in Spain, are due to appear later Sunday before a judge who will decide within 24 hours whether to detain or release them. It is the latest dramatic development in the crisis unleashed by the Catalan separatists’ push for independence from Spain that sent shock waves across Europe. Puigdemont and his allies fled to Belgium last Monday after Spain sacked the Catalan executive and imposed direct rule on Madrid following the regional parliament’s declaration of independence last month. “They were deprived of their liberty at 9.17 am (0817 GMT),” the Belgian prosecutor’s office said. “We were in regular contact with the lawyers of the five people and they agreed to turn up at the police station,” prosecution spokesman Gilles Dejemep

Party of deposed Catalan leader wants him as election candidate.

The separatist party of deposed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who is facing an arrest warrant issued by Spain, said Sunday that they wanted him as candidate for regional elections on December 21. “We want president Puigdemont to be the person who leads the big offensive we will carry out on the 21st at the polls,” PDeCAT spokeswoman Marta Pascal told party members. She said the conservative, pro-independence party was looking to put together a “big united list,” a day after Puigdemont himself called for separatists to unite in the election called by Spain to quell the region’s push for independence. The 54-year-old has been in Belgium since Monday and ignored a summons to appear before a judge in Madrid, saying he wants guarantees he will receive a fair trial. The judge issued the European arrest warrants late Friday for Puigdemont and four of his allies who are also in Belgium, to force them to return to Spain. During the last regional election in Septem

Tension heightens as Niger Delta Avengers suspend ceasefire

Friday’s suspension of ceasefire with the Federal Government, by the Niger Delta Avengers, and the possible resumption of attacks on oil installations has brought about heightened tension in the Niger Delta. The NDA, at weekend, announced a suspension of its ceasefire via a statement by its spokesperson, Murdoch Agbinibo. The group, which said it would renew hostilities, vowed that the fresh attacks would be worse than those of 2016, stressing, “We can assure you that every oil installation in our region will feel the warmth of the wrath of the Niger Delta Avengers.” Before the cessation of hostilities last year, its activities made the country’s oil production to reach its lowest level in nearly 30 years. Stakeholders in the region, who are worried about the adverse implications of the ceasefire on the 2018 budget, have, however, warned the Federal Government against dismissing the NDA’s threat with a wave of hand. In the last 10 days, tension has spiked in the a
