World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Twitter to remove ‘verification badge’ from some accounts.

Twitter is changing its policy on “verified” accounts, reserving the right to remove the blue badges from users who violate the online platform’s terms of service. The move came a week after Twitter launched a review of its policy following disclosures that neo-Nazi and white supremacist leaders had received verification of their accounts. The blue verification badge was created by Twitter to vouch for the authenticity of content from political leaders, celebrities and journalists, and to distinguish it from spoof or parody accounts. But in its announcement Wednesday, Twitter said its process until now failed to take into account whether users promoted violence or hate speech or otherwise violated its terms of service. “We’re working on a new authentication and verification program. In the meantime, we are not accepting any public submissions for verification and have introduced new guidelines for the program,” a tweet from the company said. “We are conductin

Maku denies returning to PDP, charges supporters to be united.

The 2015 governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa State, Mr. Labaran Maku, has denied claims by some people in the Peoples Democratic Party that he had returned to PDP. Maku, while reacting to a billboard mounted in his name with the PDP logo in front of the party secretariats in Lafia, affirmed that he remains in APGA. He told The Guardian in a phone conversation yesterday: “I am in APGA and I know I have supporters in PDP, APC, but I am not aware of my billboard being mounted in front of PDP secretariats, neither did I ask anybody to do that. “I want all my supporters, whether in APGA, PDP, APC and other parties to stop any act capable of creating violence in the state. What we are out to install in the state, if by the grace of God we win the 2019 governorship, is peace and brotherhood, as enshrine in our party’s motto.” Maku urged all the political parties and aspirants in the state to put Nasarawa and the people first

FG to prosecute energy thieves soon, says Fashola.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola on Friday said that the Federal Government would begin the prosecution of energy thieves soon. He said that this would begin when the ministry concluded its ongoing audit to tackle issue of metering. Fashola made this known at an Interactive Session with members of 21 Civil Society Organisations and the media on Friday in Lagos. Some of the civil society groups included Centre for Democracy and Social Economic Rights, Alliance for Good Governance, Grassroot Democratic Initiative and Centre for Social Economic and Human Rights. He said that some influential people in the country were not paying for power, adding that plans were on to prosecute them and drag them into the energy payment net. Fashola, however, said that government would fix the problems facing the power sector before applying sanction on energy thieves. Fashola explained that the ministry in dealing with problems of the privatisation of

Chinese, North Korean envoys talk up ties despite nuclear tensions.

A senior Chinese envoy has met an aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Pyongyang, the two sides said Saturday, stressing longstanding ties despite deep divisions over the North’s nuclear activities. Song Tao is visiting on behalf of President Xi Jinping, ostensibly to brief the North’s officials on the recent Chinese Communist Party congress and other “issues of mutual interest”. The two communist neighbours, once said by Mao Zedong to be “as close as lips and teeth”, are at odds over the nuclear standoff and US President Donald Trump is urging Beijing to pile pressure on Pyongyang.   Song, the first senior Chinese envoy to visit in more than a year, had been widely expected to raise the impasse over North Korea’s missile and nuclear tests in his Friday meeting with Choe Ryong-Hae, a top official in North Korea’s ruling party. But a Chinese Communist Party report of the meeting made no mention of tho

Super Eagles – The black man’s burden, responsibility and hope.

I am not racist in any form or shape. There isn’t even an atom of it in my DNA. Unfortunately, I also now understand clearly that as a black man I belong to a specie that has probably always been relegated by some deep-rooted cultural design to the lowest rung of the world’s systems. After decades of varied personal experiences, including travelling the world and seeing how other races react to the black person, I have come to the rather unfortunate independent conclusion that the black person is not the most loved specie on earth. And that’s putting it mildly. Looking through the archives of history the real situation would most likely be that he has never been considered at par with the rest of humanity. Think sincerely and shed your own tears! In my limited experience also I have observed the futility, in a lot of ways, of his struggle to earn respect and to be treated as an equal by other races. His potentials have never been enough in win that struggle. Rather h
