World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Google releases new app to beat slow internet speeds in Africa.

Google is releasing an app in Africa that will help internet users overcome obstacles such as the lack of high-speed connectivity and the cost of data on the continent. The release of Google Go is the U.S. technology giant’s latest attempt to extend its reach into emerging markets such as sub-Saharan Africa, where Facebook Inc. is also making inroads. The Alphabet Inc. unit has laid fiber-optic cable on the continent, eased access to cheaper Android phones and trained a workforce in digital skills. The new app reduces the amount of data needed to display search results by 40 percent and allows previous searches to be accessed offline. The internet giant has also adapted the voice function to work better on slow connections, and has partnered with pan-African wireless carriers MTN Group Ltd. and Vodacom Group Ltd. to make it work on even basic 2G connections, according to Google Africa Chief Marketing Officer Mzamo Masito. “Weak data connectivity, high data costs and l

Liverpool will not underrate Roma, says Klopp.

Jürgen Klopp believes Barcelona’s dramatic collapse against Roma at the quarter final stages of the Champions League has alerted Liverpool to the danger that awaits in the Stadio Olimpico this night and strengthens their chances of going through. The Catalonians, who held a 4-1 lead following victory in the Nou Camp, lost 3-0 in the second leg last month, sending them out of the competition. On Sunday, they were crowned La Liga champions and though Klopp admitted this emphasises Roma’s ability to achieve results that few expect, it only sharpens his own team’s focus ahead of the club’s most significant game in Europe for eleven years. He did not want to detail where Barcelona went wrong. But he would talk about the message it sends.“Barcelona thought probably that it’s decided,” he said. “Everybody is telling us that it’s possible for Roma to beat us 3-0 or 4-0. Nobody celona. Not that I needed it but, we have the warning.” As Klopp added, Roma have not conceded a goal at home

Zuckerberg Unveils Plans For Facebook Dating Service.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday the world’s largest social network will soon include a new dating feature — while vowing to make privacy protection its top priority in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Zuckerberg unveiled the plans as he addressed Facebook’s annual F8 developers conference in San Jose, California — emphasizing that the focus would be on helping people find long-term partners. “This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships, not just hookups,” Zuckerberg said in presenting the new feature, noting that one in three marriages in the United States start online — and that some 200 million Facebook users identify as being single. It will be free of charge, in line with Facebook’s core offering. The
