World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Trump blasts ex-FBI chief over alleged Clinton ‘fix’.

President Donald Trump accused James Comey Wednesday of fixing a probe into Hillary Clinton’s email last year, pointing to a heavily censored email released by the FBI as evidence. The email, released Monday, was described by the FBI as “drafts” of Comey’s July 5, 2016 statement in which he announced that the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state had concluded and no charges would be brought. The documents were censored in their entirety except for the headers in an email Comey sent to top aides May 16, and a follow-up email sent by one of his aides to other FBI officials requesting comments “on this statement so we can roll it into a master doc for discussion with the Director at a future date.” “Wow, FBI confirms report that James Comey drafted letter exonerating Crooked Hillary Clinton long before investigation was complete,” Trump said via Twitter. “Comey stated under oath that he didn’t do this — obviously a fix?

Trump warns McCain: ‘I fight back, and it won’t be pretty’. mmm

US President Donald Trump reignited a long-standing feud with John McCain Tuesday, warning "I fight back, and it won't be pretty" after the respected senator appeared to take aim at him in a speech. The relationship between the pair -- one a veteran lawmaker and war hero, the other a real estate tycoon and political neophyte before he assumed the presidency -- has long been testy. But the acrimony has risen to a new level with Trump's latest threats, which come just over a week after a war-of-words with another senior legislator from his own party, Bob Corker. Speaking on Monday night at an event in Philadelphia to honor his life's achievements, McCain had railed against the "America First" approach espoused by the Trump administration. "To refuse the obligations of international leadership...for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unp

Nigeria Has High Rates Of HIV Infection In The World, Just 10% Get Tested .

Nigeria has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in the world, but just 10% of the population get tested.  Sexual health tests in Nigeria can be a harrowing ordeal. In addition to the anxiety of discovering their results, visitors to public clinics must face the stigma around sexual activity that remains prevalent in Nigerian society. "People stare a lot when you go for testing, especially if you are unmarried," says Vivian*, a cosmetics store manager from Abuja. "They look at you like you are wayward or naughty." Many Nigerians escape social judgment by avoiding tests, with deadly consequences. In a country with one the world's highest rates of HIV infection, just 10% of the population has been tested for the disease, according to government statistics. Prevalence of Hepatitis B, another sexually transmitted killer, is even higher. But Vivian is one of the first customers of a service that allows Nigerians to avoid choosing between their safety and their r

Tanzania arrests 12 for “homosexuality” in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzanian police said Wednesday they had arrested 12 men, including two South Africans and a Ugandan, for presumed homosexuality as part of an ongoing crackdown against gays. “We arrested the criminals at (the hotel) Peacock — they were promoting homosexuality. Two are South Africans, one Ugandan and nine Tanzanians,” Dar es Salaam police head Lazaro Mambosasa said at a weekly press conference. He said the 12 were being questioned ahead of being sent before a court and did not say when they had been arrested. “Tanzanian law forbids this act between people of the same sex, it is a violation of our country’s laws,” said Mambosasa. He added the hotel manager was among those arrested for “providing a room” for the others. Mambosasa urged citizens to notify authorities if they caught wind of such activities “so we can act in time”. Police made 20 arrests — eight men and 12 women — on similar grounds on Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago Zanzibar last month. Accord

Somali president vows war on Shabaab after devastating bomb.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed vowed Wednesday to step up the war against Al-Shabaab, as he addressed thousands at a rally in Mogadishu for the victims of the city’s worst-ever bombing. Protesters wearing red bands around their heads marched through the scene of the truck bombing, a once bustling district, before gathering at a stadium where they chanted: “We are ready to fight”. Residents of the Somali capital, while wearily accustomed to regular bombs and attacks by the Islamist militants, have been outraged by the strike on Saturday which left at least 276 dead and 300 wounded. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Shabaab, a militant group aligned with Al-Qaeda, carries out regular suicide bombings in Mogadishu in its bid to overthrow Somalia’s internationally-backed government. The president, better known by his nickname Farmajo, said the attack “shows that we have not done enough to stop Shabaab.” “If we don’t respond to thi

No Brexit breakthrough coming at summit – EU’s Tusk.

EU President Donald Tusk on Wednesday warned Britain not to expect any breakthrough in Brexit negotiations at a European summit this week, saying London needed to come up with more concrete proposals. Leaders of the other 27 EU members meeting in Brussels on Thursday and Friday are set to postpone until at least December a decision on whether enough progress has been made in talks to move on to discussing Britain and the EU’s future relationship. Fears are growing that Britain may fail to strike a withdrawal agreement before its formal departure on March 29, 2019 and London had hoped the summit — where Prime Minister Theresa May will plead her case at a working dinner — might clear the logjam. “I don’t expect any kind of breakthrough tomorrow — we have to work really hard in between October and December to finalise this so-called first phase and to start our negotiations on our future relations with the UK,” Tusk said. Five rounds of talks have made some progress but

Atletico on brink of early European exit.

Atletico Madrid suffered a fresh blow to their chances of progressing to the Champions League last 16 as 10-man Qarabag held on for a 0-0 draw to secure their first ever point in the competition in Baku. It could have been even worse for the 2014 and 2016 finalists had South African striker Dino Ndlovu won a penalty rather than being shown a second yellow card for diving 15 minutes from time. Atletico now have just two points from their opening three games and remain third in Group C behind Chelsea and Roma, who face off at Stamford Bridge later on Wednesday. The visitors had a host of chances to open the scoring in the first half, but suffered from a familiar lack of firepower in already their fourth 0-0 draw of the season. Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann were both denied by Ibrahim Sehic when clean through, whilst Jose Maria Gimenez fired inches wide from a corner before the break. However, it was Azerbaijani champions Qarabag, in their first ever

Fresh beginning for Iheanacho as Leicester City sack Shakespeare.

Super Eagles’ striker, Kelechi Iheanacho may have to double his work rate if he desired a continued stay in Leicester City’s first team. Yesterday, the 2015/2016 English Premier League champions sacked their manager, Craig Shakespeare following the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion, which plunged the team into the relegation zone. Shakespeare signed Iheanacho from Manchester City this season and handed him just his second start of the campaign on Monday. With the 53-year-old, who succeeded title winning manager, Claudio Ranieri last season, gone, Iheanacho and indeed all the players will have to prove to the incoming manager that they are capable of saving the club from the drop. Shakespeare spent only four months in charge of the team before the club’s Thai owners acted despite only eight games being played of the season so far.Shakespeare was called into a meeting yesterday following the game on Monday to be informed of the decision after a disappointing run of
