World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Donald Trump is “morally unfit” to be president of the United States, former FBI director James Comey told ABC in an interview broadcast on Sunday. “I don’t buy this stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia,” Comey said of Trump, according to a transcript from ABC. “I don’t think he’s medically unfit to be president. I think he’s morally unfit to be president,” he said. “Our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country. The most important being truth. This president is not able to do that,” he said. Trump fired Comey in May 2017, citing the FBI’s behavior in investigating Democrat Hillary Clinton and its probe into possible Tru

Facebook takes out ads to tout new EU data protection law.

Facebook took out full-page ads in European newspapers Monday to trumpet tough new EU legislation that promises “more data protection for you”, as the company seeks to win back trust following a damaging privacy scandal. The new law, set to come into effect on May 25, aims to give users more control over how their personal information is stored and used online, with big fines for firms that break the rules. “New EU legislation means more data protection for you,” the Silicon Valley giant said in the blue-and-white ad, which appeared in German dailies including Handelsblatt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the best-selling Bild. It also appeared in Belgian newspapers, as well as in France’s Journal du dimanche (JDD) newspaper on Sunday. Ahead of the introduction of the European Union’s so-called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Facebook said it would be asking users to check their privacy settings and tell the firm how “we may use your data”. “You will also have

Isco leads Real Madrid to Malaga win as Zidane rests Ronaldo and Bale.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale were both rested and Real Madrid hardly broke sweat as they beat Malaga 2-1 on Sunday to climb to third in La Liga. Isco scored one and set up another at La Rosaleda in a comfortable victory for a much-changed Real side, following Wednesday’s last-gasp Champions League win over Juventus. Diego Rolan grabbed a consolation for Malaga with the last kick of the game but the result was never in doubt. “Today I can be happy with a job well done,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane said. As well as Bale and Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Raphael Varane were left out, with the all-important Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich looming next week. But Isco did his chances of a start in Germany no harm at all by bending in a free-kick that both Ronaldo and Bale would have been proud of, and then generously teeing up Casemiro when he might easily have finished himself. After scoring his first Real goal in nine appearances against his former

PSG secure title, but thoughts already on summer of change.

It may have felt in many respects as though Paris Saint-Germain’s season ended a month ago, but this Sunday they find themselves celebrating reclaiming the French title, their second trophy in a fortnight. While Neymar is still absent recovering from an operation on a fractured foot, Unai Emery’s side took back the Ligue 1 crown in the best possible fashion, demolishing last year’s champions Monaco. A near flawless run of domestic form over the last three months comfortably saw off their nearest rivals, and Sunday’s thumping triumph followed a 3-0 win over Monaco in the League Cup final at the end of March. To their credit, PSG have not wallowed in self-pity since their defeat to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League in early March, just after the crushing blow of losing Neymar to injury. “The defeat against Real Madrid was a big defeat, but apart from that I am very happy with what the team has produced this season,” said Emery recently. Pele confident Neymar can lead Brazil at World Cup.

Brazilian legend Pele says he is confident about Brazil’s chances at the upcoming World Cup and expects injured star Neymar to be fully fit to lead the side in Russia. Speaking to AFP in Dubai, the 77-year-old, who has been in ailing health recently, put his faith in Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar’s ability to recover from a fractured foot in time to lead Brazil to a possible sixth global football title. “We don’t know exactly what is going to happen, but I think for the World Cup he’s going to be in shape because his injury is not so bad,” said Pele, the only person to have won the World Cup three times as a player. “I wish he has the same luck I had in the World Cup.” PSG’s Neymar, the world’s most expensive player, has not played since breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot on February 25 in a Ligue 1 match against Marseille. He said last week he is still recovering following surgery but expects to be fit in time for the World Cup from June 14 to July

Britain eyes Brexit boost from Commonwealth summit.

Britain is hoping this week’s Commonwealth summit will boost trade with its historic partners as it prepares to quit the European single market after Brexit. The UK is pouncing on the organisation’s analysis showing the advantages of trade between Commonwealth countries due to their common language and legal systems. But some are warning that Britain’s trade with Commonwealth nations lags so far behind that with its European Union neighbours that a straight replacement is impossible. The 53 member states are gathering for their biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), being hosted this year in London. The summit proper takes place on Thursday and Friday but kicked off Monday with three days of forums and events that lay the groundwork. Born out of the former British empire, the voluntary organisation, covering a third of the world’s population, focuses on development and democracy, but is placing greater attention on boosting trade. UCH records 1,680 mental health cases in 1 year.

Prof. Olayinka Omigbodun, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, says more than 1,680 cases of mental illness were treated in the facility in the last one year. Omigbodun, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, said that government was not paying enough attention to mental illnesses inspite of the rising number of cases being recorded. She said: “The Nigerian government has not put enough emphasis on this area of health challenge which is on the increase daily. “ For instance, out of every 20 admissions made daily at the UCH, six or seven are generated from schizophrenia (mental illness). “This gives us a holistic figure of 1, 680 cases of mental health illnesses treated in UCH, annually and this is really an alarming situation on our hands. “ Sixty-five per cent of these numbers are women and girls because women are more prone to develop depression whi
