World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain...

This is my last chance to win World Cup, says Messi.

Argentina star Lionel Messi is aware time is fast running out on his international career and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia may be his last chance to win a senior international title. In an incredible career in which he’s won virtually every title including five Ballon d’Or gongs, a senior title with the Albiceleste is the only chink in his shining armour. Argentina have been three-time Copa America runners-up and also lost the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil in Messi’s 12 years with the senior team. The 30-year-old is now desperate to go one better in Russia, with his team having been beaten by Germany in extra time in Rio de Janeiro four years ago. “We feel that, if we won’t win the World Cup in Russia, the only way will be to give up the national team,” Messi told La Cornisa at the weekend.“I dream of winning the trophy in Russia. My wish is to live something similar to Brazil 2014. “You can do everything OK and fail, like Argentina in Brazil.”Argentina are considere...

Pressure mounts on Zuckerberg to face data breach concerns.

Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg is facing intensified calls to appear in person at investigations into the social network’s conduct. His company has been accused of failing to properly inform users that their profile information may have been obtained and kept by Cambridge Analytica, a data firm widely-credited with helping Donald Trump win the 2016 US presidential election. Facebook said on Friday it had blocked Cambridge Analytica from Facebook while it investigated claims the London-based firm did not, as promised, delete data that was allegedly obtained using methods that were in violation of Facebook’s policies. Both Cambridge Analytica and Facebook deny any wrongdoing.Despite pledging that in 2018 he would “fix” his company, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has managed to avoid engaging with the site’s growing number of critics – instead sending lawyers or policy bosses to various committee hearings. The 33-year-old’s recent remarks on some o...

Facebook security chief changes role to focus on election fraud.

Facebook’s chief of security said late Monday his role has shifted to focusing on emerging risks and election security at the global social network, which is under fire for letting its platform be used to spread bogus news and manipulate voters. Alex Stamos announced the change in his work role after The New York Times reported he was leaving Facebook in the wake of internal clashes over how to deal with Russian actors using the platform to spread false or exaggerated stories to cause division among US voters. “Despite the rumors, I’m still fully engaged with my work at Facebook,” Stamos said in a message posted at his verified Twitter account. “It’s true that my role did change. I’m currently spending more time exploring emerging security risks and working on election security.” Stamos advocated investigating and revealing manipulation of news at the social network by Russian entities, to the chagrin of chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and other top executive...

Another parcel blast reported in Texas.

A package exploded early Tuesday at a FedEx distribution facility in Texas, news reports said, two days after the latest in a series of blasts in Austin attributed to a serial bomber. This time the explosion rocked a facility in the town of Schertz, in the San Antonio area. Reports said one employee was injured. The Washington Post, quoting the FBI, reported that the package had been bound for Austin, the state capital. Hundreds of police officers and FBI agents are searching for a mysterious “serial bomber” after Sunday’s blast in Austin — the fourth this month — left two young men seriously injured and the city on edge. Police said the explosion was connected to three previous bombings in Austin and the bomber used a tripwire in the latest attack, showing a higher level of skill. “We’re clearly dealing with what we expect to be a serial bomber at this point,” Austin police chief Brian Manley told reporters. But Manley said police have been unable to determine a...

What Does His Reaction To “What Are We?” Mean?.

What are we? Women like to assume. In many cases, a woman in love thinks she and her “partner” are on the same page. The problem with this is that women and men are coined different and this includes their thought pattern. Depending on what a man thinks of a “relationship”, this question can encourage him to come clean with his intentions or avoid you completely. No matter how difficult it is, questions like this need to be asked so that there is no misunderstanding of intentions. How many times have you interrupted someone (not that we recommend it) or change the conversation because you were clearly not interested? When you bring up a sensitive topic and he changes the topic, he is either not interested or not ready to commit. When a man is serious and wants to commit, he does not need anyone tell him when the time is right. More often than not, he will initiate questions about “us”. Although some argue that bringing it up has made him realise he needs to go a step f...

Boxing legend Frank Bruno warns Joshua ahead of showdown with Parker.

Anthony Joshua should use his natural reach and power rather than go chasing a knockout against Joseph Parker, warns Frank Bruno. The much-loved British boxing legend is wary of Parker’s threat and thinks Joshua would be better served trying to out-box his opponent.  “Anthony Joshua has got the size, the power, and the skill – and Parker is a guy who comes to him all the time,’ Bruno told Sky Sports.“If Joshua moves around and uses his reach and his power, he should make it, not an easy fight, but make it easier for himself. “Joshua has a lot of skill, a lot of size, a lot of power. If he just relaxes and uses Parker to come in, it is as simple as that.’“If he is going to get macho and start wanting to tear up with him, then Parker is a very dangerous guy, very fit, and he is on you all the time,’ Bruno added. A gigantic unification fight with Deontay Wilder beckons for Joshua if he remains unbeaten and Bruno thinks the dedicated former Olympian deserves everything co...

Tokyo stocks open lower after tech sell-off on Wall St.

Tokyo stocks opened lower on Tuesday after a Facebook data breach scandal sent US stocks sharply down. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 0.79 percent or 169.27 points to 21,311.63 in early trade, while the broader Topix index was down 0.66 percent or 11.43 points at 1,708.54. “Japanese shares will likely fall again today with selling prevailing after the sharp falls in US stocks,” Okasan Online Securities said in a commentary. Buying on dips would be limited before a public holiday in Japan on Wednesday as well as the US central bank’s policy meeting to be wrapped up Wednesday, it said. On Wall Street, technology companies tumbled Monday following reports that the data analysis firm hired by Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign stole information from 50 million Facebook user profiles to help design software to predict and influence voters’ choices. The scandal sparked worries that it will lead to a regulatory crackdown on technology companies. Telecom carr...

New South African president suspends tax chief.

South Africa’s new president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has suspended the head of the tax service ahead of “disciplinary proceedings” as he vows to fight graft following his predecessor Jacob Zuma’s ousting. In a statement released late Monday, Ramaphosa announced that Tom Moyane had refused to resign as the South African Revenue Service (SARS) commissioner and had then been suspended. Ramaphosa has replaced his finance minister and several other senior officials since coming to power last month, when graft-tainted Zuma was pushed out of office by the ruling African National Congress party. In his letter to Moyane, Ramaphosa said “developments at the SARS under your leadership have resulted in a deterioration in public confidence in the institution and in public finances being compromised”. “For the sake of the country and the economy, this situation cannot be allowed to continue, or to worsen.” The tax service — crucial for raising funds for public services — has been a ba...

French ex-president Sarkozy held in Libya financing probe.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was taken into police custody on Tuesday for questioning over suspected Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign, a source close to the inquiry told AFP. Sarkozy, 63, had until now refused to respond to a summons for questioning in the case, which drew heightened scrutiny last November when a businessman admitted delivering three cash-stuffed suitcases from the Libyan leader as contributions towards the French leader’s first presidential bid. Sarkozy’s detention was first reported by the Mediapart investigative news site and French daily Le Monde and comes several weeks after a former associate, Alexandre Djouhri, was arrested in London and later released on bail. Djouhri was returned to pre-trial detention in February after France issued a second warrant for his arrest, ahead of a hearing scheduled for March 28. A source close to the inquiry also said that Brice Hortefeux, a top government minister during Sarkozy’s presi...
