World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain...

Soldiers arrested for trying to kill army chief.

“Their case has been heard and sent up to the military tribunal,” said General Daba Na Walna, head of the country’s high military court. They were arrested on December 14 and 15, but this was only made public Monday. The six men are currently being held at a prison located at an airbase. Two majors, a captain and a lieutenant were based at barracks 150 kilometres east of the capital, Bissau, the military source and a human rights organisation confirmed. “We gave the detained men buckets to wash in, toiletries,” said Augusto Mario da Silva, President of Guinea Bissau’s Human Rights League, adding that better conditions had been demanded for the soldiers, as well as the guarantee of defence lawyers. The tiny west African state has been in the grip of a power struggle since August 2015, when President Jose Mario Vaz sacked then prime minister Domingos Simoes Pereira. Guinea-Bissau has been plagued by military coups and instability since its independence from Portugal in 1974, w...

The Dangerous Effect Of The Bleaching Agents Added To Bread.

Most of the bread we buy in Nigeria has a small section on the bread wrapper where bromate free or free from preservatives is written on it. This labelling started not because bakeries allegedly stopped adding it but because the Dora Akunyili led-NAFDAC administration clamped on bakeries using dangerous bleaching preservatives. Part of the reason for adding these bleaching agents is to make the bread appear white and maintain its fresh look. It is believed that this white colour makes it visually appealing. The problem with this is that these bleaching agents are dangerous to our health and should be totally avoided. Here is a list of some of the agents Freshly Baked Homemade White Bread. Photo credit: One Green Planet Potassium Bromate This oxidizing agent (additive) has been banned in several countries including Canada, Brazil, European Union and the Dora Akunyili led-NAFDAC administration because it caused cancer in the thyroids of lab rats and mice. In humans, it damages t...

Urbi et Orbi: Pope calls for peace for Jerusalem.

Pope Francis has used his traditional Christmas Day message to call for "peace for Jerusalem" and dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. Acknowledging "growing tensions" between them, he urged a "negotiated solution... that would allow the peaceful co-existence of two states". US President Donald Trump recently announced that America recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The controversial move drew international condemnation. Media caption Why the city of Jerusalem matters Last week, UN members decisively backed a non-binding resolution that said any decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem were "null and void" and must be cancelled. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their future capital, and all countries currently keep their embassies in Tel Aviv. The Roman Catholic leader gave his Urbi et Orbi speech, which in Latin means "To the city and world", in Saint Peter's Square. ...

OAU Student Drag Racing on Xmas Day Dies In Horrible Crash (Pics) .

Remember late Paul Walker, one stars of the mega franchise  Fast & Furious  ? He passed away in a most horrendous manner. Eye witnesses say the vehicle he died in was speeding before it crashed into a lamp post and burst into flames that completely incinerated him and his companion.  Why am I making this morbid reference? Simple reason: speed kills, and is still killing.  A Nigerian Tweeter @chukaobi shared a terrible eyewitness account of the dangers of speeding. In this case, the people involved were drag racing at the midnight hour. Were they intoxicated? High on adrenaline?  One explanation is the victim was member of a race team, and was even going to participate in a big event next year, so perhaps he saw the midnight hour as a time to showcase his skills. Read below: "At exactly 12:50am today (Christmas Day) my Uni alumni pals & I were coming out of Lekki County Estate when two cars flashed by us, the sound they made you’d think they’re power bi...

It’s A Shame Nigerians Are Celebrating Christmas In Discomfort – Osinbajo .

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has admitted that it is a shame Christmas celebration in Nigeria has so far been characterised by discomfort caused by the lingering fuel scarcity. His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, in a statement on Monday morning quoted the Vice President as speaking during the interactions he had with some people keeping vigil at two filling stations in Lagos. Osinbajo was said to have made surprise appearances at Oando Filling Station in Lekki and Hayden Petrol Station, Victoria Island. “It’s such a shame that Christmas has been, to some extent, with this sort of discomfort. “This is deeply regretted, and l know that, despite the resilience and strength of people in Lagos and the Nigerian people, we would see ourselves through this and will enjoy our Christmas and have a great new year,” he was quoted as telling those who were on queue to buy the scarce commodity. He said the Federal Government was moving as quickly as it could to so...
