World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Nissan slashes profit forecasts after inspection scandal.

Japanese car giant Nissan on Thursday slashed its forecast for full-year operating profit after admitting that a damaging inspection scandal last year had “adversely impacted” the firm’s performance. Nissan said it now expects operating profit of 565 billion yen ($5.2 billion) for the fiscal year to March 2018, a drop of 12.4 percent from its previous estimate in November. “During the period, the Group’s performance was adversely impacted by special items related to the final vehicle inspection issue in Japan, along with slowing sales growth, negative pricing trends and inventory adjustments in the US market,” it said in a statement. Nissan was forced to recall some 1.2 million vehicles after admitting in October that staff without proper authorisation had conducted final inspections on some vehicles intended for the domestic market before they were shipped to dealers. The automaker suspended all domestic production for a few weeks, sending its passenger car sales p

Tokyo stocks open higher after volatile trade.

Tokyo stocks opened higher on Thursday, after US stocks finished lower amid nagging questions about two days of wild price swings. The benchmark Nikkei index, which fell nearly five percent on Tuesday before rebounding 0.16 percent on Wednesday, edged up 0.38 percent, or 81.24 points, to 21,726.61 in early trade. The broader Topix index was up 0.51 percent, or 8.84 points, at 1,758.75. “Those who led sales Wednesday afternoon were presumably foreigners, including hedge funds who had invested globally,” Masayuki Kubota, chief strategist at Rakuten Securities, said in a commentary. Hedge funds had to sell Japanese stocks to minimise their losses, he said, adding that such moves are now calming down.   Japanese shares may pick up “if Japanese corporate earnings continue sound performances and if US interest rate rises stabilise within a certain range,” he said. The dollar fetched 109.32 yen in early Asian

Kane is Europe’s best admits Wenger despite derby tension.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger put North London rivalries aside as he accepted Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane is the most in-form striker in Europe on Thursday. Kane, 24, became the second fastest player to ever reach 100 Premier League goals by netting his 31st of the season in just 32 games to salvage a point for Spurs from a thrilling 2-2 draw at Liverpool last weekend. “If you look at the numbers, no, because he has high numbers,” Wenger said when asked if there was a better striker in Europe at the moment than Kane. The England international spoke this week of how being released from Arsenal’s academy as an eight-year-old left him with a “chip on his shoulder”. Kane has more than taken revenge with a fine record against Arsenal, scoring six goals in seven North London derbies. Wenger broke Arsenal’s transfer record last week to add more firepower to the Gunners quest to beat Tottenham to a top-four finish by splashing out £56 million ($78 million) on Pierre-Em

Gambia rejoins Commonwealth under new president.

The Gambia was readmitted to the Commonwealth on Thursday, welcomed back following the democratic election of President Adama Barrow, who reversed the shock pullout of 2013. His predecessor Yahya Jammeh suddenly withdrew the impoverished west African nation in October that year, branding the group an “extension of colonialism” as he lashed out at international organisations. Accused of flagrant rights abuses, Jammeh ruled mainland Africa’s smallest country with an aura of mysticism and an iron fist after seizing power in 1994. Barrow began the readmission process in February last year, two months after topping an election in which Jammeh initially refused to give up his 22-year rule, triggering a crisis. Barrow’s formal application to rejoin the Commonwealth, submitted last month, received unanimous support from member states. Setting the seal on its return Thursday, The Gambia’s flag was raised in a ceremony at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s hea
