World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Spurs leaning on Wembley home comforts to oust Juventus.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino believes turning his side’s temporary Wembley home into a fortress can ensure progress to the Champions League quarter-finals when they host Juventus on Wednesday. Spurs hold the upper hand on the Italian champions, who have reached the final in two of the past three seasons, after battling back from 2-0 down in Turin in the first leg to salvage a 2-2 draw. The Wembley factor was cited as one of the key reasons for Spurs’ failure in Europe last season as they crashed out of both the Champions League and Europa League at the first time of asking. However, Pochettino’s men have acclimatised during the course of a season at the home of English football whilst work on the club’s new 62,000 capacity stadium is completed. Son Heung-Min struck twice as Tottenham eased past Huddersfield 2-0 on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run at Wembley in all competitions to 15 games. That stretch has included landmark wins over Real Mad

A club spokesman told AFP that he could not give a cause of death ahead of an autopsy. Italian media reported that Astori died of a heart attack during the night. EU aims to tax internet giants at ‘two to six percent.

The EU will soon unveil a plan for taxing major internet companies like Amazon and Facebook by imposing a levy of two to six percent on revenues in every country where they operate, French finance minister Bruno Le Maire said Sunday. “The range will be from two to six percent; but closer to two than to six,” Le Maire told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper. The European Commission has said it will present by end March an overhaul of its tax rules, which currently allow US digital economy giants to report their income from across the bloc in any member state. That leads them to pick low-tax nations like Ireland, the Netherlands or Luxembourg, depriving other nations of their share of the revenue even though they may account for more of a company’s earnings. “The heads of these companies know themselves that this system can’t continue,” Le Maire said. Critics say the tax-avoidance strategies used by the tech titans known as GAFA -- Google, Amazon, Facebook and Ap

South Africa listeriosis outbreak toll hits 180.

South African health officials said on Sunday that listeriosis has killed 180 people since the start of last year and originated at a food factory in the country’s northeast. Listeriosis is caused by a bacteria found in soil, water, vegetation and animal faeces, and can contaminate food, especially fresh meat, dairy, seafood. It is prevented by basic hygiene and washing food. “The source of the present outbreak can be confirmed to be the Enterprise food production facility in Polokwane,” said health minister Aaron Motsoaledi in a statement. Products made at the plant would be subject to safety recalls, he added. Enterprise could not immediately be reached for comment. “We advise members of the public to avoid all processed meat products that are sold as ready-to-eat,” said Motsoaledi. Sierra Leone’s outgoing leader has defended the presidential candidate widely seen as his handpicked successor on amid accusations of personal interference, and hit out at opponents of an election day vehicle ban. The West African nation goes to the polls on Wednesday to choose a replacement for Ernest Bai Koroma, who is stepping down after 10 years as president, along with a new parliament. Koroma told AFP at a rally Saturday in the western town of Kambia that Samura Kamara, the candidate of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC), would not act as “his master’s voice”, adding: “He is definitely going to be himself.” The president is staying on as party chairman after stepping aside, leading to accusations he wants to retain control of the APC from behind the scenes via his former foreign minister.
