World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Benue anti-open grazing law not unconstitutional, says AG.

The Benue State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Michael Gusa, yesterday insisted that the new anti-open grazing law did not violate the country’s constitution. He made the clarification yesterday in an interview in Makurdi, the state capital, saying those who are opposed to the law were the Fulani herdsmen and others not resident in the state. He added such people were either ignorant of the provisions of the law or deliberately out to ferment trouble. Gusa said contrary to insinuations, the law prohibiting open grazing does not in any way violate the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. He explained that the law only restricts the movement of livestock and not human beings, stressing that the herdsmen in Benue are comfortable with it. “The law prohibiting the open grazing of livestock is not targeted at any tribe. Many of the herdsmen who want to remain in the state had complied with the law. “Since the implementation of the law, no Fulani man

It also urged the National Assembly to prevail on Northern states to issue Certificates of Occupancy to churches in the region. In his words: “CAN calls on the National Assembly to compile the list of all organisations that Nigeria belongs to and all the treaties signed with a view to dropping all the religious ones. “That we declare the inability of the state governments to pay workers’ salaries and allowances as and when due as unacceptable and call on the federal and state’s

Democratic election sweep is lousy anniversary gift for Trump.

US President Donald Trump suffered a triple defeat as Democrats won high-profile state and mayoral elections to underscore his unpopularity on Wednesday’s first anniversary of his dramatic election win. The Tuesday night results amounted to a sweeping repudiation of what critics have called Trump’s politics of division, and a test of his influence ahead of electoral battles looming on the state and national level. The most damaging defeat was in Virginia, a state bordering Washington seen as a bellwether for national politics with the country gearing up for 2018 congressional elections and the next presidential contest in 2020. The Virginia governor’s race had all the makings of a nailbiter, but in the end, Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam trounced his Republican rival Ed Gillespie by an unexpectedly wide nine percentage points in the southern battleground state. In New Jersey, Democrat Phil Murphy reclaimed the governorship with a victory of about 13 percenta

Funding threatens Nigeria’s participation in World Cup, Commonwealth Wealth Games.

Stakeholders in the Nigerian sports’ sector have raised the alarm over what they described as the country’s poor preparations for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and FIBA Women World Cup in 2018 as well as the FIFA World Cup scheduled to hold in Russia also next year. The Commonwealth Games will hold in Gold Coast, Australia in April, while the World Cup will kick off in Russia in June next year. Experts believe that for an athlete to win a medal at such competitions and the Olympics, he must have been preparing for at least four years before the event. Within that period, the athlete is expected to compete in various international meets, where he tests his ability against other world-class stars, apart from going for qualifiers that are specified. For the FIFA World Cup, serious preparations don’t start until after the end of the football season leading to the competition, but the country’s federation is expected to put all logistics together, well ahead of the arri
