World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Volvo profits rev higher on record sales.

Swedish truck maker Volvo said Wednesday that its net profit sped ahead by 60 percent rise in 2017, as strong global demand for heavy goods vehicles drove up sales to a new record. Investors cheered the latest earnings numbers, with Volvo’s share price climbing 3.6 percent on the Stockholm stock exchange in mid-morning trading on a flat market. Volvo said in a statement that its net profit soared to 21 billion kronor (2.0 billion euros, $2.67 billion) for the full year, as sales jumped by 11 percent to 334 billion kronor. Operating income rose by 46 percent to 30.3 billion. “In 2017 the Volvo Group achieved its highest sales and operating income in history,” said chief executive Martin Lundstedt. “We also improved our profitability with an operating margin of 9.1 percent,” compared to 6.9 percent in 2016, he added. Nigerian Brothers Arrested Over Drugs Sent By Post To Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Three Nigerian nationals were arrested in Nonthaburi’s Muang district this week along with 2,750 ecstasy pills, which carry a logo in a shape of cell phone SIM card, that reportedly were sent via a post from Belgium to the gang, Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Sutthipong Wongpin said on Friday. The suspects – Justin Chiedozie Uzukwu, 30, his elder brother Declan Kaodichi Uzukwu, 32, and Okwor Stephen Onyema, 35 – were arrested along with the ecstasy pills plus eight grams of cocaine and eight grams of marijuana at Justin’s rented house in Tambon Bang Krasor of Muang Nonthaburi. Police also seized a Nissan Sunny sedan, several passports, and a post package with traces of ecstasy pills sent from Belgium, Sutthipong said. The ecstasy pills – which were forwarded to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board for further inspection – were sent to the gang via post from Belgium and the gang reportedly distributed it to others at Bt500 per pill. Lassa fever kills 21 in Nigeria, says health officials.

Twenty-one people have died from Lassa fever in Nigeria this month, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said on Wednesday, in the latest outbreak in Africa’s most populous nation. “Since the beginning of 2018, 80 cases have been classified as: 77 confirmed cases, three probable cases with 21 deaths,” the NCDC said on Twitter. Cases have been reported in 13 of 36 states while 10 health care workers had been affected, it added. Lassa fever belongs to the same family as Marburg and Ebola, two deadly viruses that lead to infections with fever, vomiting and in worst-case scenarios, haemorrhagic bleeding.
