World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Air strikes in east Syria kill 12 civilians: monitor.

Air strikes on one of the last villages still held by the Islamic State group in eastern Syria killed 12 civilians, including four children, a monitor said Monday. The strikes were carried out late Sunday on the village of Susa in Deir Ezzor province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. “Twelve civilians from a same family, including four children, were killed,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. The Britain-based monitoring organisation, which has a broad network of sources on the ground, said the strikes were likely conducted by the US-led coalition that launched air raids against IS in Syria and Iraq in 2014.   There was no immediate comment from the coalition. The Islamic State group has lost nearly all the territory it once held in Iraq and Syria and is clinging to a scattering of small villages and pockets of land in the border area. The coalition admitted on Thursday to “uni

Walmart Throws Down Gauntlet to Amazon.

The company intends to leverage a series of key acquisitions and its more than 4,600 brick-and-mortar locations to mount a direct challenge to Amazon for millennial customers. Walmart -- the largest retail operation in the world and the leading U.S. challenger to Amazon -- presented its objectives at its annual meeting with Wall Street analysts, where CEO Doug McMillon said the company is committed to turning itself into a digital powerhouse. "No doubt we are in a transformational period of history," McMillon said at the meeting. "Business is transforming, and Walmart is transforming too." Not Your Father's Big Box Walmart plans an aggressive expansion of its online grocery business, with 1,000 new locations in the U.S., McMillon said. The company also has been experimenting with delivery to customers in the

Evolution of the 4th Utility: Fixed Broadband.

In-home broadband has become "the fourth utility" in United States households, many of which have multiple connected devices and viewing screens. More than 85 percent of U.S. homes have broadband service, according to  Parks Associates , 93 percent of those have DSL, fiber or cable high-speed, fixed-line Internet services. The demand for high-speed fixed broadband is a key contributor to ongoing revenue and profitability for operators, particularly due to declines in pay-TV and landline voice subscribers. The competitive market has changed vastly over the past two years, as have the services available. AT&T acquired DirecTV and launched an online pay-TV service (DirecTV Now) that it bundles with broadband, satellite TV and mobile. Charter acquired TWC and Bright House to become Spectrum, which serves roughly 30 percent of the U.S. residential fixed broadband market -- about 23 million consumers, similar to the size of Comcast's customer base. Everton Vs Manchester United Today At 6:30pm - .

Manchester United's seasonhas hit something of a roadblock in recent times, with a four-gamestreak without a win seeing them eliminated from the League Cup while also puncturing their hopes of putting distance between themselves and the contenders for the final Champions League spot. Having fallen behind Chelsea into third place on Saturday due to their 0-0 draw with Southampton at Old Trafford, their New Year's Day trip to Everton takes on a new significance. Jose Mourinho and his men will be hoping that they can start 2018 off on the right foot in order to draw a line under their poor run over the latter part of December. The full verdict on Romelu Lukaku's head injury has yet to be delivered but the Belgian is likely to miss a couple of weeks of action after being stretchered off on Saturday following his clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.
