World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain

Aisha Buhari Exposes Aso Rock Clinic Management: "No Single Syringe There".

..The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, has followed the footsteps of her daughter, Zahra, by criticising the management of Aso Rock Clinic. Mbappe needs more games, says Lloris.

Teenage France star Kylian Mbappe simply needs more matches under his belt to start shining on the international stage, according to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Like the rest of his team-mates, Mbappe failed to impress on Saturday in France’s crucial 1-0 win in Bulgaria that kept their World Cup destiny in their own hands. Victory on Tuesday at home to minnows Belarus would secure their ticket to Russia 2018. And even though Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe struggled in Sofia, Tottenham’s Lloris believes he will come good. “He wasn’t inhibited at all, but he needs to string some France matches together,” said Lloris, the France captain. “It’s difficult to judge a player on his performance against Bulgaria. It was a battle, very tight. “Kylian is still a young player, he has time to reach his objectives, even though, already at 18, he’s able to make the difference in big matches.” Despite being on the brink of qualification, France have come in for much criticism during thi

This time we’ve got Ronaldo’, Pepe warns Swiss.

Portugal defender Pepe warned Switzerland that Tuesday’s decisive World Cup qualifying clash in Lisbon would be “completely different” with Cristiano Ronaldo available for the European champions. Switzerland have won all nine Group B qualifiers so far, including a 2-0 victory over Portugal in their opening match when Ronaldo was out injured, and need just a draw to secure a place in next year’s finals. But Portugal, who trail the Swiss by three points, can pip their opponents to first place with a victory as they have a vastly superior goal difference. “It was our first game and we didn’t have our best player, our talisman Cristiano Ronaldo,” Pepe, now at Besiktas but formerly of Real Madrid, told a press conference. “I know Ronaldo, and I know how much he wants to go to the World Cup,” said Pepe. “Tomorrow will be completely different.” While one side will seal a World Cup berth, the other is at least guaranteed the consolation of a place in next month’s play-offs. Erdogan says US decision to halt Turkey visas ‘very saddening’.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said he was sad about a decision by the US embassy to stop all regular visa services in Turkey amid a diplomatic row. “Above all, this decision is very, very saddening,” Erdogan said in his first reaction to the decision, at a news conference with Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in Kiev. “For the (US) ambassador in Ankara to take a decision like this, to put into practice is saddening,” he added. The row, which analysts have described as the worst dispute between the NATO allies in half a century, erupted when Turkey jailed a Turkish employee working at the US consulate in Istanbul. Ankara hit back at the US move to suspend the issuing of non-immigrant visas with a tit-for-tat response against American citizens in the United States wishing to travel to Turkey. Erdogan defended Turkey’s reaction to the crisis, saying: “Turkey is a state with the rule of law, we are not a tribal state.” He noted that the announcement

US, Turkey mutually suspend visa services in escalating row.

The United States and Turkey on Sunday scaled back visa issuing services in each other’s countries in a deepening diplomatic row sparked by the arrest of a Turkish staffer at the American mission in Istanbul. The American embassy in Ankara said that “recent events” forced the US government to reassess Turkey’s “commitment” to the security of US mission services and personnel in the country. In order to minimise the number of visitors while the assessment is carried out, “effective immediately we have suspended all non-immigrant visa services at all US diplomatic facilities in Turkey,” it said. Non-immigrant visas are issued to all those travelling to the United States for tourism, medical treatment, business, temporary work or study. Immigrant visa services are only for those seeking to live in the US permanently. Turkey responded by suspending “all visa services” for Americans in the US, saying the measures also apply to visas issued online and at the border. In an ap

Almost 150 former Turkish military personnel go on trial Monday over clashes on an Istanbul bridge during last year’s failed coup that claimed dozens of lives including a key aide of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The bridge across the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul was the scene of bloody fighting between Erdogan’s supporters and renegade soldiers seeking to oust the elected government on the night of July 15, 2016. It was later renamed by the government as July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge. The dead included Erdogan’s campaign manager Erol Olcok and his 16-year-old son Abdullah Tayyip, who were killed when soldiers opened fire on protesters on the bridge which connects Asia and Europe. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has denied all allegations of impropriety levelled against it and its group managing director Maikanti Baru by Nigeria’s minister of state for petroleum resources Ibe Kachikwu. Kachikwu in an August 30 letter to President Muhammadu Buhari accused Baru of humiliating the Board. Dated a day after the NNPC announced a massive shakeup, which affected 55 management staff, the minister said it was not the first time changes would be made without the Board’s input. “It is in the spirit of service and absolute belief in your leadership and integrity that I have, after one year of tolerating these disrespectful and humiliating conducts by the GMD, decided to bring these to your attention,” the minister wrote in the letter. But such accusations were unfounded and “unfortunate”, said Ndu Ughamadu who is Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC. “It is important to note from the outset that the law and the rules do

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) yesterday adduced reasons why the military was yet to rescue the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) lecturers, oil workers and women abducted by Boko Haram terrorists, saying the sect was using the captives as a shield. Haunted by past failures, England must rewrite history.

England have booked their place at next year’s World Cup, but their chances of making an impact in Russia are slim if recent history is anything to go by. Gareth Southgate’s side wrapped up their successful Group F campaign with a 1-0 victory in Lithuania on Sunday, extending England’s unbeaten record in qualifiers to 39 matches. Southgate should take only minimal encouragement from that however, as England have often eased through the qualifying stage before suffering ignominious exits when it gets to crunch time in the tournament. Here, AFP Sport looks at the lessons to be learned if they are to exceed expectations in Russia: Win back fans In the 51 years since England won the World Cup on home soil, the national team’s reputation has been tarnished so badly that fans turned their back on them when qualification was clinched against Slovenia on Thursday. With Wembley barely half full, England endured the indignity of supporters becoming so bored with the limp displa

He hinted in an interview on Sunday that the region would go ahead and declare independence if Madrid continues to refuse dialogue. "We have left the door open to mediation and we have said yes to so many mediation options that have been proposed," he told Catalan television channel TV3. "The
