World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. UN extends probe of Myanmar violence.

The UN decided Friday to extend an investigation into abuses committed in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine state, where violence has forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims to flee. The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution tabled by the European Union calling for the international fact-finding mission to be given another six months. Several countries distanced themselves from the resolution, including China, but none demanded a vote in the 47-member council, and the measure was adopted by consensus. The council set up the mission in March to investigate possible violations across Myanmar, with a particular focus on alleged crimes against Rohingya in Rakhine state. The Muslim minority is loathed in Myanmar, denied citizenship and are instead branded “Bengalis” — or illegal migrants who do not belong in the Buddhist-majority country. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it is partnering the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to ensure hate speeches, particularly in the social media, are reduced to the barest minimum. The executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the NCC, Engr. Umar Garba Danbatta, made this known in Calabar Wednesday while opening a two-day workshop on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Utilization and Sustainability for South South Zone, organised by the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), a unit within the NCC. Boko Haram trials to be held behind closed doors.

Trials of Boko Haram suspects in Nigeria will take place behind closed doors with no media present, a justice ministry official with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Friday. The move was made on security grounds following discussions between the government and the Department of State Services intelligence agency. “There will be no access to the media,” said the official, who asked not to be identified. “The decision was based on the need for confidentiality because of security issues that may come up during the trial.” The justice ministry announced last week that the trials of more than 1,600 suspects were scheduled to begin from October 9. It blamed delays in prosecution on poor investigation techniques such as lack of forensic evidence, “over-reliance on confession-based evidence” and logistical problems.
