World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. However, Trump has declared that he was “not satisfied” with the status of the talks, fuelling worries that the world’s top two economies could still slug out an economically pain...

Interesting Facts about Mermaids.

Interesting Facts about Mermaids Mermaids  are the mythical creatures that were initially created as the personifications of the water deities of ancient civilizations. They were celebrated as the bringers of life and fertility because of the sea endless supply of food, and also as forces of great nature power and destruction. The most common  cause of constant sighing of mermaids during the centuries was manatees (sea cows). Their mermaid-like appearance caused sailors to mistake them when viewing them from afar. Even Christopher Columbus reported seeing ugly and fat mermaids on his first voyage to America. Mermaids  are presented in almost every culture across the world as beautiful women who have fish tails as the lower half of their bodies (sometimes snake tails), long hair and beautiful voice that can mesmerize or hypnotize men who hear it. Modern view of mermaids  was shaped by Hans Christian Andersen 1836 fairytale "The Little Mermaid" which desc...

PDP Convention: Agbaje withdraws from national chairmanship race.

Former Lagos State Governorship aspirant, Mr Jimi Agbaje, has withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship race. Agbaje made this known in a letter dated Dec. 8 and referred to the Chairman of the PDP National Convention Planning Committee. He said his intention to withdraw from the race was premised on the fact that seven out of the nine aspirants were from the South-Western part of the country. According to him, having such number of aspirants from one geopolitical zone might rob it of the chance to win the position. “Our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, has, from inception, adopted certain principles, which have evenly balanced offices amongst the country’s geo-political zones. “In line with such and other parameters, I have, at different fora, expressed my strong belief that the next National Chairman should come from the South-West. “I am however convinced that with seven out of nine aspirants coming from the South-West,...

Read How Acupuncture May Ease Pain Tied to Breast Cancer Care.

THURSDAY, Dec. 7, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Some common breast cancer medications can trigger joint pain, but new research suggests acupuncture may ease that side effect. The finding could be a win-win for breast cancer patients, said one oncologist who reviewed the study. "Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and has no real downside," said Dr. Lauren Cassell, chief of breast surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "If something so simple as acupuncture can improve upon these symptoms and the patients' quality of life, we will have more women becoming compliant in taking their medication, and one would expect improved outcomes," Cassell added. The new study was led by Dr. Dawn Hershman, who heads the Breast Cancer Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, also in New York City. Hershman's team tracked outcomes for 226 postmenopausal women with early stage breast cancer who were taking drugs called ...

Palestinian president to shun Pence over Jerusalem move.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas will refuse to meet US Vice President Mike Pence later this month following Washington’s controversial policy shift on Jerusalem, an Abbas aide said on Saturday, as protests gripped the Palestinian territories for a third straight day. Retaliatory Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip killed two Hamas militants before dawn, as unrest simmered over President Donald Trump’s controversial declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. A total of four people have now been killed and dozens wounded since Trump announced the move, which drew criticism from every other member of the UN Security Council at an emergency meeting on Friday. “There will be no meeting with the vice president of America in Palestine,” Abbas’s diplomatic adviser Majdi al-Khaldi told AFP. “The United States has crossed all the red lines with the Jerusalem decision,” he added. There were fresh clashes on Saturday as Palestinian protesters in the occupied West Bank ...

9 Things You Didn’t Know Google Assistant Could Do.

1. Make It Read the News to You This is a great feature that you probably aren’t aware of — Google Assistant actually reads out news related to topics of your liking, from sources of your preference. And these are actual people reading the news, not some speech-to-text conversion. To enable this, you first need to open the  Google App , swipe open the left menu, then go to  Settings . Under  Google Assistant , click  Settings > News . Here, you can add news sources (currently only available in English) like CNN, BBC, Reuters, WSJ, Bloomberg, TIME, etc. There are also a bunch of publications with spoken coverage of tech news, business, sports, health, science, politics, etc. Once you’ve set this up, just say “Play the news” to Google Assistant (which you can invoke by a press and hold of the home button). Now, all those sources you chose will start playing one by one. You can also control playback by saying “Next” to jump to the next publication...
