World markets dive as Trump sparks trade, North Korea worries

Global stocks sank Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with talks that are aimed at averting a trade war with China. Equities were also dented by poor eurozone economic data, and as Trump cast doubt on a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Trump (is) continuing to drive uncertainty over global trade,” said analyst Joshua Mahony at trading firm IG. “European markets are following their Asian counterparts lower, as a pessimistic tone from Trump is compounded by downbeat economic data,” he added. Markets had surged Monday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said they had agreed to pull back from imposing threatened tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, and continue talks on a variety of trade issues. South Korea protesters call for ex-leader Park’s release.

Hundreds of demonstrators on Saturday called for the immediate release of South Korea’s ousted president Park Geun-Hye whose corruption trial has been put on hold following mass resignations by her lawyers.
Park’s trial was put on hold Thursday after her lawyers resigned in protest over what they called biased proceedings following a court decision to extend her detention warrant for another six months.
Park condemned the trial as “political revenge” in her first public statement since she was arrested, while her lawyers protested over the extension of the warrant, saying that the principle of the presumption of innocence was “collapsing”.
A crowd of some 1,000 pro-Park protesters marched through Seoul for more than an hour, chanting slogans and waving South Korean and US flags.
“Release President Park Geun-Hye immediately”, they chanted.
The sprawling scandal involving the 65-year-old former leader and her powerful secret confidante, Choi Soon-Sil, unleashed massive nationwide protests last year, culminating in her impeachment in March.
Park — who faces multiple charges including bribery, coercion and abuse of power for offering governmental favours to business tycoons who helped enrich Choi — refused to appear in court on Thursday, citing her allegedly poor health.
The court has been adjourned to an unspecified date till it appoints state attorneys to replace the lawyers who have stepped down.

APDA, PDP, commend INEC for “timely” release of 2019 elections’ timetable.

The Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) and the Peoples Democratic Party have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “for early release of timetable and schedule of activities for the 2019 general elections.” The political parties gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday. The APDA National Publicity Secretary, Mr Tosin Adeyanju, described the timetable and schedule of activities as a welcome development for political parties.
